The federal government has slashed airfares in half for thousands of domestic flights across Australia.
We don’t need to tell you its been a challenging year for Australia’s tourism and travel industries. With international flights halted and frequent border closures between states, flight companies and tourism providers have been navigating one of their most difficult years in recent memory. But now, the federal government is going part of the way to helping these struggling businesses with a flash sale offer.
You heard that right: the government is offered over 800,000 half-priced flights to different locations across Australia. It’s part of a broader support package to assist the tourism sector throughout the rest of 2021, encouraging Aussies to explore their own backyard.
The $1.2 billion package includes these half-priced tickets, which have been subsided by the federal government. The program also includes added financial support for airlines Qantas and Virgin to ensure they can remain up-and-running when international borders reopen later this year.
But back to the tickets. Between April and July 2021, you’ll be able to travel to 13 handpicked destinations for 50% off. These areas have been chosen by the government due to their reliance on international visitors, and tickets are slated to go on sale from Virgin, Qantas, and Jetstar from April 1st, 2021.

- Alice Springs
- Launceston
- Devonport
- Burnie
- Broome
- Avalon
- Merimbula
- Kangaroo Island
While the exact flight times and costs are yet to be announced, early reports suggest you’ll be able to score flights from Melbourne to the Gold Coast for just $60.
