The Basement Sydney has had a relaunch. An intimate music space is matched with a high end culinary and cocktail experience.
The first thing worth knowing about The Basement is that there are two sections. Upstairs is home to a cocktail bar and seated tables suitable for a great meal or a quick Rusty Nail before checking out some talent like Justin Townes Early and Nai Palm. The Basement is the live music venue with a relaxed stage and charming stage.
Upstairs
Upstairs isn’t just a spot to have dinner and drinks before a show it’s a stand alone venue. On this occasion the place is buzzing with a great atmosphere. The food gets a tick of approval also, we recommend trying the steak Diane and frites or the lamb shoulder with whipped sweet potato mash and spiced jus. The juicy lamb lamb is cooked perfectly you could pull it apart with a spoon. The beverage list includes a solid list of beer and wine coupled with some classic cocktails. Upstairs is a great spot if you’re seeing a show or just feel like dinner and drinks after work.
The Basement
This is the oldest licensed music venue in Sydney and regarded as one of the best Jazz venues globally. The Basement has history, serious history. Vince Jones, Herbie Hancock and Dizzie Gillespie have all played this relatively small (compared to arena’s) intimate venue. We were lucky enough to see Nai Palm play a solo set to a packed venue. It’s a testament to the space and it’s performers that they can hit capacity on a Monday night while Sydney was in the grips of the stormaggedon.
As for the rest of the year The Basement has booked shows such as Christine Anu who is doing a 20th anniversary tour of her hit album Stylin’ Up and The Bad Plus.
There are too many shows to list here and too many cocktails to rave about in one article. The only way to really experience The Basement is to get in there and check it out for yourself.
