Spice Alley
Chippendale · Pan-Asian hawker-style (Singaporean, Thai, Malaysian, Cantonese, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Southeast Asian)

The menu is short and sweet with the choice of four signature burgers, small sides, Japanese soft serves, and Japanese inspired soft drinks and beers. The four signature burgers consist of the Ume (a Japanese take on a traditional cheeseburger), the Ebi (a handmade prawn katsu patty), the Menchi (a handmade pork katsu patty) and the Kakiage Burger (for those non-meat eating burger fans). All burgers are served in the same Hokkaido milk buns, which add a fluffy finish to the satisfying burgers.
For us the Ebi burger is a highlight. With a light, crispy prawn katsu, shredded cabbage and a Japanese tartare sauce are beautifully presented between the light burger buns. There's no greasing after finish or post burger meat sweats and regrets with this beauty.
Sides are often overrated but at Ume Burger they could almost be the main attraction. Try the umami salted hot chips and you'll notice they have a slight sour cream and chives flavour to them. The koji fried chicken is a must-try. This fried chicken differs from the crunch of standard buttermilk fried chicken. The koji fried chicken practically melts in the mouth, with a lighter crisp on the skin and a softer middle.
Dessert comes by way of a soft serve station. The flavours change daily and are very much like a Japanese take on Bertie Botts Every Flavour Beans. One day could be a refreshing strawberry, the next sweet potato or pumpkin!
Kerby applies his fine dining experience to the burger business and has managed to balances it perfectly with this friendly, simple offering. Authentic Japanese cuisine is at the heart of Ume Burger, as well as the friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Ume Burger Wulugul Walk, Barangaroo NSW 2000 http://www.umeburger.com/
