West Side Story on Sydney Harbour 2019

Events, Play, Sydney / 20 March 2019

Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour returns in 2019 with an epic romance – West Side Story.

Picture this. You’re floating on the harbour, Sydney’s iconic Opera House and Harbour Bridge seemingly at your finger tips. With a Champagne flute in hand, you’ll raise a glass as the sun goes down, and enjoy a live opera performance like no other. Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour is back in 2019, and for the first time, you can now watch the iconic West Side Story.

West Side Story first exploded onto Broadway in the 1950s, taking its cues from William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Now in an exciting turn, it’s taking to the iconic floating stage on Sydney Harbour down by Mrs Macquarie’s Chair, covering famous songs including ‘Tonight, ‘I Feel Pretty’ and ‘America’ ringing out into the balmy night air.

Running from Friday 22nd March until Sunday 21st April, this pop-up opera house, complete with bars, restaurants and tiered seating is set to blow its guests out of the water, pun intended.

With tickets starting from $99, opera lovers are given the opportunity to marvel at a monumental set, complete with vibrant costumes, spectacular dance and a breathtaking display of fireworks.

The cast features star crossed lovers and homegrown stars Alexander Lewis and Julie Lea Goodwin, alongside an all-singing, all-dancing supporting cast. Taking their cues from director Francesca Zambello alongside Brian Thomson and Jennifer Irwin, you can expect a production like no other.

Those looking for dinner and a show are given plenty of options at this years event, with five outposts to choose from. For a luxurious experience, try the The Platinum Club. For $245pp, this undercover restaurant and bar offers an indulgent three-course menu, table waiters, Tyrrell’s wines and dedicated restrooms.

Guests can also dabble in the Travel Associates Platinum Club Buffet ($130pp). You’ll be able to try a bit of everything from a buffet, laden with cured and smoked meats, cheeses, salads and delectable sweets. Waiters are on hand to top up your glass of select Tyrrell’s wines.

At a slightly more modest cost, guests can also enjoy hot dishes and desserts on the Northern Terrace, and smaller bites on the Southern Terrace. On the Northern Cantina, you’ll also find a variety of share plates, while the Qantas Garden Bar will be selling pre-show bites and drinks.
