There’s never been more choice when it comes to buying sustainable tuna and better seafood in general.
If you’ve ever stood in the supermarket aisle wondering whether your tuna is actually a good choice for the planet, here’s some encouraging news: the answer is increasingly yes. In a major shift that has quietly transformed grocery shelves throughout the country, close to 70% of canned tuna sold in Australia is now certified sustainable, making it easier than ever to shop with confidence.
The change has been led by the big three: Coles, Woolworths and ALDI, all of which have switched their home-brand tuna ranges to 100% sustainably sourced options certified to the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). The result? What was once a conscious choice is now the norm, with more than 200 MSC-labelled tuna products available to shoppers across Australia.
Behind the scenes, this movement is helping to prevent overfishing while supporting healthier oceans and more secure livelihoods for coastal communities. Most of the tuna we eat in Australia is sourced from the Western and Central Pacific Ocean, meaning what we add to our trolley can have a meaningful impact far beyond our own kitchens.
And Australians are certainly embracing tuna as a go-to pantry staple. From speedy desk lunches to protein-packed dinners, we consume an estimated 336 million servings each year. Need inspiration? Check out the Marine Stewardship Council’s foodie guide to tuna.
