Backed by renowned Australian Chef, Justin North, Sofia is plating up a generous serving of southern-Mediterranean fare, seven days a week.
Surry Hills area has really become its own foodie hub over the years, and it’s showing no signs of giving up its title. Ace Hotel’s 18th-floor restaurant, Kiln, made its long-awaited debut last month, following the opening of Bar Conte –Riley Street’s new negroni-centric aperitivo bar, and now the space above Cleveland Street’s iconic Bar Cleveland has been transformed into a southern-Mediterranean haven, showcasing traditional homestyle dishes.
Named after co-owner Sophie Bousgas’ grandmother, Sofia’s share-style menu is an ode to Sophie’s Greek family heritage. The dishes are flavourful but uncomplicated, shining a spotlight on the quality and seasonality of the locally sourced produce, further elevated by the venue’s grill.
Sofia’s own extra virgin olive oil, made from the family’s olive groves in Greece, accentuates dishes with the kind of fresh Mediterranean flavour that instantly transports you to late-evening dinners in Europe set to a gently lapping ocean and late setting sun. Must-try dishes include; Chargrilled eggplant salad with parsley, currants and pine nuts; 1kg of slow-cooked, charred lamb ribs with oregano, lemon and flake salt: and to finish, a Walnut syrup cake with mascarpone.
In the newly revitalised 1800’s building, Sofia has been fitted out with a soft, neutral interior showcasing the natural bones of the building. Exposed brick and timber are accented with wicker chairs and plush terracotta-leather banquette seating. The result is an inviting space that could easily be placed amidst the intimate eateries of Mykonos shores.
