Byron Bay’s Oasis On Wategos: Raes Cellar Bar

Drink, Eat, Restaurants, Travel / 8 April 2024

A stone’s throw from Wategos Beach in Byron Bay, Rae’s Cellar Bar is a seafood haven with incredible cocktails and views for days.

At the bottom of Raes‘ frequently photographed steps (and for good reason!) lives Raes Cellar Bar. This walk-in-only terrace has the cutest decor in town. The space is flawlessly positioned for visitors to take in the gorgeous view of Wategos Beach.

As you arrive, friendly staff will greet you with Raes’ innovative drinks list. The Paloma comes highly recommended, and after a sip, you’ll know why – this zesty grapefruit treat makes the perfect refreshment after a day spent in the sun on Wategos Beach.

The Cellar menu is undeniably seafood-centric, hosting everything from dressed native oysters to Raes’ signature Bay Lobster Roll. The chef’s recent addition, Raes’ Grillda, features smoked anchovy and bocconcini on mini skewers (with a charming fishtail detail), served in an adorable sardine tin. Thoughtful touches like these are what make Raes so special.

Not a fan of fish? Do not fret! Some enticing alternatives are on offer, like the Byron Bay Burrata with blood plum, radicchio, and almond – and we think the Bread Social Grilled Sourdough makes the perfect vehicle to savour every creamy bite of this heavenly dish.

Raes Cellar Bar is open daily from midday until sunset and its casual, walk-in nature makes it the perfect rendezvous spot for beachgoers. If you’re in Byron Bay, we recommend putting Raes Cellar Bar on your itinerary. With the freshest oysters in one hand and a Raes Margarita in the other – it’s not one to miss. They operate on a first-come, first-served basis and it’s no surprise that seats fill up quickly (so arrive early!).
