The beloved Black Star Pastry outpost has found a new home in Newtown.

It’s a bakery that needs almost no introduction. For Sydneysiders with a perchance for all things sweet, Black Star Pastry will be a familiar favourite. Since 2008, the chain of top-notch patisseries has been delighting Aussies with a delightful selection of gourmet cakes, flaky pastries, and must-try sweets.

And it all started with a humble shopfront on Australia Street in Newtown. Over the past 12 years, the pastry store has sold thousands of cakes, opened four stores across Sydney, and most recently headed south with the opening of its first permanent Melbourne shopfront.

And for anyone who has visited their original Newtown outpost, you’ll know it’s a cosy space. Located away from the hustle and bustle of the main road, Black Star Pastry’s Newtown shop was an intimate grab and go spot with a few seats tucked away at the front of the shop.

That is, until now. In exciting news, the crew from Black Star Pastry have relocated to a new spot on King Street in Newtown. The sleek new space has been designed by Studio MKZ (who also designed their newly opened outpost in The Galeries) and has taken inspired from famous Parisian patisseries.

So, what can you expect from this new venue? There’ll be loft ceilings, a tiled marble entry, and plenty of spots to dine-in. Grab a seat at their long marble countertop or nab a seat near the windows overlooking King Street.

You’ll get to see the team work their magic with an exposed pastry counter and plenty of thoughtful design touches that nod to what Black Star does best.

As you’d expect, the menu here isn’t too different from their previous Newtown location. You’ll still be able to score all the Black Star classics, including the oh-so-Instagrammable strawberry watermelon cake along with a black sesame and yuzu cake, plus the pistachio lemon zen cake (and much more).
