Best German restaurants in Sydney
Chow down on pork knuckle and wash it down with a stein of Bavaria’s best
German restaurants Sydney locals actually return to are less common than the Oktoberfest hype suggests, but the handful that do it properly are worth knowing.
While many pubs and restaurants serve specials for the huge German festival, these spots serve up authentic dishes all year round. So, whether you’re deep in Oktoberfest season or just craving a pork knuckle on a random Tuesday, these are the beer halls, clubs and institutions doing German food without the gimmick.
If you’re looking for a few more options, there are some staple Austrian restaurants around town serving a similar cuisine. These include Una’s in Darlinghurst and the Austrian Beer Bar & Restaurant in Narabeen.
When is Oktoberfest in 2026?
Officially, it actually starts in September. The festival in Munich kicks off on 19 September and runs through 4 October. However, many Sydney venues offer food specials and events well into Oktober.
Munich Brauhaus has been The Rocks go to for proper German beer hall energy for years, and it still delivers. Live music most nights, a beer list deep enough to actually explore, and the kind of hearty plates that turn a harbourside lunch into a three hour session without anyone noticing.
Perched on the rooftop of the Westfield Miranda, this is the Shire's answer to a proper Bavarian feast without needing to stray too far from the beach. Sharing platters, a serious beer list and a menu that does not pretend to be anything other than hearty German comfort food.
Cronulla German beerhall does not do things by halves, platters built for sharing, a warm welcome from the owners, and food that tastes like it was made by someone who actually grew up eating it. Worth the drive south on its own.
Concordia Club has been quietly preserving Sydney German community since 1883, and the bistro is the kind of unpretentious find locals guard closely. Classic German dishes, a solid range of German beers on tap, and none of the Oktoberfest theatre some venues lean on.
