Need a holiday but don’t want to travel too far? We’ve rounded up the best camping spots that can be found right in Sydney’s backyard!
A positive to come from the international travel ban is that Aussies have started to unveil the beauty that is right in our backyards. For us Sydneysiders, we have so many incredible options to choose from including wine countries, eco-retreats, country towns and coastal getaways. If we’re looking to totally switch off, one of our favourite things to do is hire a camper van off GoSee, pack our bags and take a camping trip. We’ve rounded up some of our favourite places to go camping close to Sydney and they’re all within 3 hours drive.
Royal National Park
If you’re looking to travel under an hour, we’d head straight to Sydney’s heritage-listed Royal National Park. With 16,000ha for you to explore, spend your weekend bushwalking, cycling, surfing, picnicking or whale watching. One of our favourite hikes to do here is the Figure Eight Pools which is about a 3-hour return walk with beach views. Bonnie Vale offers a beautiful spot to camp between Bundenna and Maianbar and can be accessed by car or ferry from Cronulla.
While you’re there, take a hike to Wedding Cake Rock and tick it off GoSee’s Backyard Bucket List.
Euroka Campground, Glenbrook
If you’re looking for a bush camping experience, head to Euroka Campground which is located right near the Nepean River in the Blue Mountains. Unwind with the sound of birds, the smell of eucalyptus trees and the great outdoors. This one is a great place for a family camping trip with lookouts, caves and mountain bike trails to keep everyone occupied. There are multiple campgrounds to choose from within Euroka and they’re all accessible via car.
If you feel like giving your legs a workout, head to Katoomba and tick Giant Stairway off GoSee’s Backyard Bucket List.
Coledale Beach Camping Reserve
Take the scenic route south of Sydney for about an hour, drive over the Insta-famous Sea Cliff Bridge and you’ll land in a small town called Coledale. With crystal blue waters and rolling green hills from the Illawarra escarpment, this place gives you the best of both worlds. There’s a powered campsite at the local surf club allowing you to perch up adjacent to the beach and wake up to the smell of sea salt. From swimming, surfing, fishing, and enjoying the local restaurants and cafes, it makes for the perfect weekend away.
On the way down, we suggest stopping in Helensburgh to check out the Glow Worm Tunnels from GoSee’s Backyard Bucket List.
Killalea Reserve Kiama
Located two hours south of Sydney, Killalea Reserve provides an off-the-grid getaway (quite literally as there’s no reception) with a point break for the surfers. ‘The Farm’, as referred to by the locals faces southeast offering consistent waves throughout the year. Schedule a surf lesson, take a hike on the coastal bushwalking tack or order takeaway from the on-site cafe and perch up for a picnic with beautiful views. This public recreation reserve has unpowered sites and facilities so you can stay the whole weekend.
While you’re in Kiama, discover ‘The Big Poo’ which is just 1 of 150 oversized sculptures sprinkled across the country, and you can tick another destination off GoSee’s Backyard Bucket List.
Honeymoon Bay Currarong
This addition is a little further away at a 3-hours drive from Sydney CBD, but it’s well worth it. Honeymoon Bay is tucked inside Jervis Bay’s northern head and is accessible via car through the Beecroft Weapons Range. With crystal clear beaches, it’s perfect for snorkeling, lazy beach days and safe swimming for the kids. The campsite isn’t glamorous and offers minimal in terms of facilities, however it’s worth it for the pristine surroundings.
While you’re in Currarong, head to Mermaid Inlet Cliffs to feel like you’re on the edge of the earth and tick another destination off the GoSee Backyard Bucket List.
Once you’ve picked your destination, we suggest jumping onto GoSee to find the best deal on cars and campervans. The website allows you to search for rentals worldwide and discover the best prices so you have more money to spend on your holiday!
