Grab your coats, it’s time to hit the Winter Night Market!
It’s that time of the year again. Melbourne has shed its sunny, clear blue skies and now offers moody, chilly nights. But don’t despair. One of the best things about winter is the Queen Victoria Winter Night Market, (nee Lunar 1878).
Every Wednesday night (5-10pm) until August 30, The Queen Victoria Market transforms from a fresh food marketplace and tourist hub to a bustling Winter Night Market.
Now in its sixth year, Melbournians are treated with all that is good this winter: great food, drinks, entertainment and shopping.
With the theme this year being fire and lights, the Winter Night Market will warm and brighten your evening with an extravaganza which includes 30 global food traders and 50 specialty design stalls.
Stave off the chills at Bone Brth. Launching for the first time at the Winter Night Market, they know just how to keep our bellies warm and our guts healthy with flavoursome and hearty beef and chicken broths.
Thoughts of sun and spice might point you in the direction of well-known Paco’s Tacos who is serving Mexican street food including their tasty tacos and deliciously sweet grilled corn.
The popular pasta in a cheese wheel by Thats Amore Cheese is back to make us oh so carb-happy. Who can say no to spaghetti with 4 cheeses – ricotta, bocconcini, scamorza, parmesan – tossed in a 40kg Parmiggiano cheese wheel?
Carnivores can enjoy many char grilled meats this season. Flamed Skewers will serve up Chinese style skewers including chicken and soy with banana sauce, or a cumin spiced lamb made with a traditional Tibetan recipe.
For dessert, be tempted by Butterlake Pancakes, who are launching their vegan pancakes at the Winter Night Market. These Taiwanese pancakes with a twist come in enticing flavours such as Nutella, Peanut butter and jam, Oreo and choc chip, and Hershey’s and coconut.
No Winter Night Market is complete without a glass of hot mulled wine. Your taste buds will be rewarded with a warming combination of cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, vanilla and a touch of chilli. So grab a cup from ReWine, warm up in front of the open fires and enjoy the live music.
If mulled wine isn’t your thing, head for Coldstream Brewery who are debuting their hot apple cider. Or, if you don’t mind having cold fingers, grab an icy glass of beer from Coopers Ales.
