Tortas And Tacos Is Serving Mexican Street Food In A Tiny Car Park

Eat, Melbourne / 2 March 2020

You’ll only find six (delicious) menu items here

Blink and you’ll miss it. Tucked away in an empty Collingwood lot is a small Mexican food truck (formerly a kebab joint) that can seat no more than 15 people. Frankie’s Tortas and Tacos doesn’t have a big menu to look at, not a single tequila selection in sight and definitely no 150 ingredient deconstructed burrito – but what it does have is simple, hearty and flavourful Mexican street food.

The humble food truck houses a few plastic chairs, bar seats and only three tables, yet by lunch is swarming with eager customers from 9-5 workers to students and tradies. Since opening at the end of last year, Tortas and Tacos have been selling out daily (so get there early if you don’t want to miss out!)

The two hero items on the menu is all in the name: quite literally tortas (Mexican sandwiches) and tacos. The tortas are made from soft, fluffy bread coming hot off the grill. This is paired with gooey melted cheese, avo, black beans and essential veggies like lettuce, coriander and pickles. You then get to choose your choice of filling – al pastor (spit grilled pork), beef milanesa (thin strips of beef that are fried) or mushroom. The tortas are served with more pickled vegetable goodness and you of course get to mix hot sauce to your liking.

Tacos are filled to perfection with onion, coriander and the perfect amount of salsa in each. You get a choice of 3 options: al pastor with pineapple, beef asada or mushroom. Did we also mention that every item on the menu is less than $15?

On the drinks list there’s Mexican sodas, iced or filtered coffee and homemade horchata for sale (a milky sweet rice based drink)

Tortas and Tacos is currently open until 4pm (or until sold out). Find more info on their website here
