A new exhibition brings Japanese-inspired eats to Chiswick at the Gallery

Eat, Play, Sydney / 6 November 2019

Get your dose of culture and a very Insta-friendly Bento Box and Asahi Beer all in one place.

There’s a certain magic to Japan. It’s a destination filled with majestic temples, mysterious folklore and laneways of hidden bars at every turn. And this November, a new exhibition is bringing the best of this whimsical land to Sydney (with a limited edition dining experience to match).

Japan Supernatural is the latest exhibition to land at The Art Gallery of NSW, bringing together over 180 imaginative works from Japanese artists past and present. From November 2nd 2019 to March 8th 2020, experience artworks of the ghosts, goblins and mischievous shapeshifters that make Japan’s folklore one-of-a-kind. The exhibition is anchored by the work of Takashi Murakami’s monumental installation of painting and sculpture, with works from leading Japanese artists including Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Kuniyoshi and Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, alongside contemporary artists such as Chiho Aoshima, Fuyuko Matsui and Miwa Yanagi. From sweeping paintings to miniature carvings and even large-scale installations, this is set to be a truly unique cultural experience.

If you’re looking to complete your gallery experience, make sure to swing by Chiswick at the Gallery to sample their Japan Supernatural themed dining package. In fitting with the concepts explored in the exhibition, diners will be treated to a Japanese-inspired set menu experience. Curated by Head Chef Tim Brindley, taste your way through a three-course menu, along with a glass of wine or Asahi beer plus receive a ticket to the Japan Supernatural exhibit (valued at $25) for $82 per person. Expect dishes like the beautiful “Chiswick style” Bento Box plus a strawberry and matcha sesame ice-cream sandwich to get you in the mood for the exhibition.

Plus, Chiswick at the Gallery will also be serving up a selection of Japanese-inspired drinks to complement this limited edition menu. Expect a premium selection of classic sakes, Yuzushu (a refreshing citrus liqueur) and Umeshu (a fabulous sweet-and-sour liqueur made with the lovely plum-like Ume fruit). Want something a little stronger? Make sure to try one of the venue’s bespoke Japanese cocktails.
