Uncover pre-loved gems across two jam-packed days of epic garage sales across Australia.

67 million tones. That’s how much waste Aussies generate every single year. Yep, that’s a pretty sobering stat. And this weekend, we’ve found the perfect way for you to cut the clutter and give your stuff a second life.

Now in its 9th year, the annual Garage Sale Trail is returning on October 19th and 20th for one big weekend of garage sales. From humble beginnings as a single garage sale in Bondi founded by Andrew Valder and Darryl Nichols, the event has grown into Australia’s biggest weekend of garage sales with a record number of events listed across the country this year. In 2019, nearly 400,000 Aussies are set to shop over 18,000 sales registered nationwide.

The goal of the weekend is simple: to spread the word about reusing, repairing, reselling and buying second hand. And this message has never been more important, with landfill and waste a huge problem across the globe. By helping to divert our stuff away from landfill, the Garage Sale Trail hopes to find new homes for 3.2 million kilograms of pre-loved gems this weekend. The event has taken out a string of sustainability awards including the NSW Government Green Globe Awards. Plus, the concept has proved so popular that the UK government has just adopted the idea as well.

And for those who sign up to host a sale, the rewards extend beyond merely reducing waste. Last year, the event helped participating households raise roughly $300 in sales. Who could think of a better way to earn some extra dosh?

For shoppers, there are endless treasures to be uncovered. Last year, one lucky shopper walked away with the giant shark Greg Norman tee’d off on top of in the Olympic Games Closing Ceremony. Plus, another shopper even scored themselves the luxe yacht used in The Great Gatsby film.
