Le Monde serves up a quality breakfast that won’t break the bank.
Le Monde is an unassuming cafe in Surry Hills, only a five minute walk from Central Station. It is almost inevitable that you’ve seen snaps of the greentea matcha pancakes with mascarpone cream, fresh fruits, toasted grains & coconut espresso on your social media feed. They are an Instagram sensation. If you haven’t already seen it – look it up. Plus, for the real matcha enthusiasts there’s also a matcha latte on offer.
On the morning of our visit, we were in more of a savoury mood, opting for brekky board complete with soft boiled eggs, avocado soldiers, granola, yoghurt & fresh fruits. There aren’t many places in Surry Hills that would serve such a spread for only $15.
My guest went for the truffled poached eggs with grilled haloumi, tomato, avocado & white truffle oil on toasted miche. Again, a very generous portion for $16.
We had a scan of the menu and for lunch, there’s salads like the chicken, apple & walnut combo with a honey mustard dressing. If you’re after something more substantial there’s a choice of three burgers including a pulled pork with apple coleslaw, fried egg, chilli aioli & french fries on toasted brioche bun.
Although the menu at Le Monde isn’t groundbreaking (beyond the matcha pancakes!) it does all the cafe classics very well. Each of us ordered a coffee and a tea. The tea was loose leaf and the Five Senses coffee won’t leave coffee snobs disappointed.
It’s no surprise that on a mid-week morning Le Monde had a steady stream of customers, with many obvious regulars. In a neighbourhood like Surry Hills where the competition is steep, only the decent places stick around.
Before we left to start our day, we ordered another round of coffees to take-away and one of Le Monde’s home made berry muffins. Shaped more like a giant cookie, I was sceptical at first but persuaded that it was a house favourite. My advisor wasn’t wrong, the muffin was excellent. I think what made this muffin incredible was the greatness of its muffin top!
