Whirly Bird Opens its Doors in Pyrmont

Eat, Sydney / 8 November 2017

Fried, grilled, roasted… Sydney-siders sure love their chicken.Whirly Bird delivers in Pyrmont.

Tucked away on Union Street in Pyrmont, newly opened Whirly Bird encourages share-style dining in a no-fuss atmosphere. With Anthony Prior (formerly of The Keystone Group) at the helm, the space is intimately lit and split up into multiple dining areas with a total seated capacity of 150. Whirly Bird has a dining room for large functions, cosy nooks and unique outdoor areas so you can pick your vibe for the night.
The menu serves tasty small plates, bar snacks, main courses, and desserts, but it’s the poultry that steals the show. Signature menu items include their rotisserie spit roast birds (which you can choose as quarter, half or whole portions) and buttermilk fried chicken with chilli and honey caramel sauce ($18) – Sorry, can we borrow your napkin? We drooled all over ours.

Vegans and vegetarians needn’t steer clear with the ‘No Harm, No Fowl’ menu – Salt ‘n’ Pepper Tofu with ginger and ponzu ($15), Crumbed Eggplant Schnitzel with smoky mozzarella ($22) and the Vegan Power Bowl ($24) ensure your plant-loving pals are also well fed.
Before we take it to the bar we have to give a shout out to the snacks and sides, which are just as mouth-watering as their main-course counterparts. Celery battered jalapeño poppers ($14), duck fat roasted carrots, or charred sweetcorn cob with chipotle butter are all winners.

Rollo Anderson and Liam Doherty-Penzer (both formerly of The Rook) are the duo behind the expertly crafted cocktail menu. Anderson and Doherty-Penzer drew inspiration from musical legends like Elvis Presley and old records. The cocktails are worthy of a serenade with the entire menu designed to complement the Whirly Bird experience with an Intro, Bridge, Chorus and Outro.

Sip on the Sgt. Peppers ($17) with pisco, lemon, pink peppercorn, and guava or the Hunky Dory with gin, lime, apricot brandy, and black cherry lemonade ($19).
