Perfect for a post-work tipple and bite to eat, the flavours of Tokyo and Seoul collide at TOKKI.
Anyone who has made a trip to Japan will be well-acquainted with the izakaya experience. Not quite a bar, not quite a restaurant, these cozy casual spaces are adored by locals looking to drink and dine after a long day at the office. The plates are small, the drinks strong and the venues stay open late. If you’re looking for a slice of Tokyo nostalgia, this new Surry Hills spot will tick all your boxes.
Say hello to TOKKI, the new bustling Asian eatery taking inspiration from the izakayas of Seoul and Tokyo. Proudly positioned on Foveaux Street, this vibrant venue is set to serve busy Sydneysiders with an unmissable dose of snacks and share plates washed down by well-made cocktails, sake, Japanese whiskey and so much more.
At the helm of the venue is TOKKI’s owner and founder David Bae, a hospitality veteran with a love for the culinary styles championed in Tokyo and Seoul. Drawing upon his Korean heritage (his father opened the first Korean BBQ joint in Australia during the early 1990s), David has created a unique dining experience designed to bring a taste of traditional izakaya’s direct to Sydney.
As you’d expect, TOKKI’s menu is driven by share plates and tapa-style snacks designed to be enjoyed over a drink (or two). Expect everything from Pork and Kimichi Kyoza, spanner crab on brioche rolls, bao buns and their famous Korean Fried Chicken. Plus, you’ll also find more substantial bites such as the Tokki BBQ Tray (loaded with short beef rib, pork belly, baby pork galbi and gochujang chicken) as well as delectable Miso Butter Prawns.
For something sweet, you’ll also find indulgent desserts such as the Tokki Monaka (a red bean, vanilla ice cream wafer sandwich) and a Yuzu Cheesecake with mango sorbet on the dessert menu.
When it comes to drinks, expect to sip something special at TOKKI. Explore their vast selection of Japanese whiskeys, craft beers, spirits, organic Australian wines as well as a menu of signature cocktails. Make sure to order their Cactus Jack (featuring Mezcal, lime, pineapple and ginger agave with basil) or the Merry Soju (mixed with sojo, yuzu, suze and lavender St Germaine).
Find TOKKI at 44a Foveaux Street, Surry Hills. Open for lunch Thur to Sat (12pm – 3pm) and dinner Mon to Sat (5pm till late).
