It’s time to dive into Kings Cross’ newest catch!
There’s a new addition to the Kings Cross scene, and it’s bringing back a touch of yesteryear glamour. The Hook, opened by the team behind Piccolo Bar and Vermuteria, is an oyster and cocktail bar that celebrates the simple pleasures – fresh seafood, classic drinks, and a relaxed atmosphere.
Step inside, and you’re transported to a bygone era with deep red walls adorned with vintage finds like beer lights and maritime paintings to set the mood. A grand piano sits in the corner, promising the occasional live music session to whisk you away with familiar tunes from the 80s or the gentle touch of a jazz pianist. The real star of the show, though, is the beautiful horseshoe bar, polished and inviting, where you can perch and watch the bartenders in their white coats work their magic, shucking oysters with practised ease.
David Spanton, the brains behind The Hook, has a clear vision. “We’ve all been missing a proper oyster bar in Sydney,” he says. “We wanted to create an old-school experience with good service, great cocktails, and a place where you can unwind and reconnect.” The focus is firmly on fresh, high-quality oysters, sourced from different regions each week. Whether you prefer them natural, showcasing the briny kiss of the ocean, or Kilpatrick, a touch smoky with bacon and Worcestershire sauce, or Mornay, rich and creamy with a hint of cheese, there’s something for every palate.
Spanton is also a firm believer in keeping things simple yet satisfying. The food menu reflects this philosophy, offering comforting classics like juicy burgers, plump hotdogs served on toasted LP’s buns (a nod to the iconic Sydney record store), and a cheese plate sourced from the renowned Penny’s Cheese Shop. It’s the perfect accompaniment to a night of sipping cocktails and enjoying the ambience.
The drinks list itself is a love letter to the past. Classic cocktails like perfectly balanced Martinis and refreshing French 75s, their champagne bubbles tickling your nose, share space with some interesting twists. The Hook Martini, a creation Spanton is particularly proud of, features Never Never Oyster Shell Gin, adding a touch of briny complexity. Spanton has even revived the Black Velvet, a delightful mix of Guinness and prosecco for those seeking a touch of Irish charm. Whether you’re a whiskey aficionado or a fan of coastal ales, The Hook’s curated selection caters to a range of preferences.
The Hook feels like a welcome addition to the ever-evolving Kings Cross landscape and it’s sure to reel you in with its charm and sense of community.
