Don’t Fear the “Cabeza” At This New Potts Point Taqueria!
Potts Point, a Sydney neighbourhood known for its vibrant bar scene and eclectic eateries, has welcomed a new addition that promises a taste of Mexico – with a twist. Tucked away in the charming laneway of Llankelly Place, Tacos Tacos Tacos isn’t your average taco joint. This petite eatery, brought to you by the team behind the beloved Caravin bistro, focuses on quality ingredients and bold flavours, offering a casual and delicious Mexican experience.
Gone are the days of searching for a specific dish on a lengthy menu. Here, the name says it all: tacos. Chef Joe Valero, a native of Guadalajara, curates a concise selection that celebrates the versatility of this Mexican staple. Unlike the ubiquitous tacos overflowing with familiar ingredients, Valero’s creations showcase his passion for using less-common cuts of meat.
The star of the show might be the “cochinita pibil,” a slow-braised pork shoulder taco bursting with citrusy and tangy flavours. It’s a symphony of textures, with the tender pork meeting the satisfying crunch of pork crackling and the freshness of onions. For the adventurous diner, the “cabeza” offers a taste of pig’s head, thoughtfully prepared and topped with a flavourful salsa macha.
But Valero doesn’t shy away from crowd-pleasers either. The “suadero” is a slow-cooked brisket taco, where the meat’s richness is perfectly complemented by salsa morita and diced onions. Vegetarians are well-catered to with a smoky taco featuring nopales (cactus) and frijoles, offering a delightful exploration of Mexican vegetarian cuisine.
The small space reflects the pared-back menu. Think minimalist décor with a warm and inviting atmosphere. Channel your inner local and grab a spot at the bar lean-in table, or if the weather permits, take a seat at the fold-out chairs that spill out onto the laneway, reminiscent of a traditional Mexican taqueria.
While there’s no indoor seating at present, plans are in motion for a liquor license, promising a future filled with refreshing Mexican beers and perhaps a classic margarita. For now, thirst-quenching Jarritos and house-made aqua fresca provide the perfect accompaniments to these flavour-packed tacos.
Tacos Tacos Tacos is worth a visit, come prepared to lose yourself in the flavours, embrace the social atmosphere, and discover pairings beyond your classic chicken and salsa.
