Sydney’s oldest pub is turning a new page—and cracking its first eggs.
Fortune of War in The Rocks has officially reopened with a slick new bistro and, for the first time in its nearly 200-year history, a breakfast offering. Because who says you can’t teach an old pub new tricks?
The newly unveiled Bistro 1828—named after the year the venue was first built—is a 60-seat all-day diner nestled in the heritage-listed building on George Street. It’s part of a major revamp by WDS Hotels, who’ve also breathed new life into the upstairs Russell Boutique Hotel.
Open from 7am ‘til late, the bistro is serving pub classics with a few modern spins, plus signature brekkie dishes like pancakes, a stacked Big Breakfast, and a Bloody Mary with a secret house mix. There’s avo toast, eggs benny, and even a breakfast burger. It’s a first for this sandstone institution, and a sign that the city’s most historic watering hole is staying relevant while keeping its charm.
“We’ve always imagined serving breakfast here—now it’s finally a reality,” says co-owner Steve Speed. “And with the new kitchen and expanded space, we’re set up for the next 200 years.”
Expect classic pub fare throughout the day—fish’n’chips, beef and Guinness stew, burgers—with new additions like pastas, fresh salads and share plates. A Sunday roast is on the way too.
Downstairs is all warm woods, copper accents, and vintage bottles found during the renovation. Upstairs, The Russell Boutique Hotel’s 28 rooms have been completely refreshed, blending heritage features (think original fireplaces) with boutique style and comfort.
Fortune of War is open daily from 9am, and Bistro 1828 from 7am-late.
