Sydney Festival turns 50 from 8th-25th January 2026, and Sydney will feel it everywhere.
Under new Festival Director Kris Nelson, the festival launches a bold, city-wide program. It celebrates five decades of creativity while looking confidently ahead. As a result, theatres, streets, waterfronts and civic spaces all come alive, turning Sydney into a summer playground for art and culture.
Meanwhile, The program leans into big moments. Walsh Bay becomes a live film set with Live at Hickson Road: Effectos Especiales, a free street takeover full of action cinema and party energy. At the same time, theatre fans can catch LACRIMA by acclaimed French playwright Caroline Guiela Nguyen. Elsewhere, Mama Does Derby sees Virginia Gay, award-winning Australian actor and director, transform Sydney Town Hall into a full-scale roller derby track.
Finally, public art and music bring the summer vibes home. Julia Phillips, known for her striking large-scale sculptures, installs Observer, Observed in Darling Harbour. Over at the Opera House, UK electro-pop favourites Hot Chip deliver euphoric, career-spanning live shows. With Blak Out and Sydney Symphony Under the Stars also returning, January is officially packed.
