Step back in time at this years Spring Harvest Festival at Elizabeth Farm.
This is your chance to taste a bit of history. The inaugural Spring Harvest Festival is happening this month, giving all you foodies the chance to jump back in time and experience fare of the first Aussie settlers.
Elizabeth Farm was first established back 1793 by John and Elizabeth MacArthur, the pioneers of the Australian wool industry. The couple quickly transformed their land into a thriving farm, offering up an abundance of fresh produce, grains and livestock. Australia’s oldest surviving homestead will open up for visitors during the festival, allowing the chance to explore the homes fascinating interior and gardens.
Experience how the family lived and dined within their humble abode while you shop and sample along the way. A selection of Sydney’s finest artisan food producers will showcase their delights, such as pickles, preserves, honey, coffee, teas, salts, spices, smoked foods and heirloom produce. Meet the brains behind all these delicious goods and learn about their adopted methods for handcrafted and locally grown food and their commitment to traditional preparation methods.
There are many hands-on demonstrations and work shops on throughout the day. Discover the mastery in preparing traditional hand churned butter with Pepe Saya while Cornersmith will educate you on the art of preserving. Brasserie Bread will also be around on the day, giving you the chance to try your hand at grinding wheat and kneading dough in the authentic colonial kitchen.
Laze about under the shade of the elm trees in the reconstructed garden with some sips and nibbles from the many stalls and food vendors or pop by the Elizabeth Farm Tearooms after a day of historical adventures for a homemade Devonshire tea or a ploughman’s lunch.
The event is free with a gold coin donation into the homestead. There will be a free shuttle bus running from the Darcy Street side of Parramatta station to Elizabeth Farm. The program for the day is jam packed so get ready for a day of history told through food.
