Since I Left You, aka SILY, celebrates its 6th birthday with a whole new menu.
‘Your friendly neighbourhood small bar’ is the only one-liner you need to describe SILY. Housed between three heritage listed storehouses in the CBD, SILY is the ideal watering hole for after work drinks or a Saturday night cocktail. And yes it was named after that Avalanches song. SILY, or the bar formerly known as Since I Left You, recently celebrated its 6th birthday and was gifted a well-earned makeover. The entire menu has been relaunched and we can confirm it’s tasting mighty fine.
A canopy of fairy-lights deck out the courtyard, where there’s plenty of tables and umbrellas for those that prefer dining/drinking among the elements. The courtyard is alive with colour and features an 18 metre-high Fintan Magee mural, along with art from Scott Marsh, Presto and Jimmy Nice.
When you’re relaunching a menu you’re gonna want some fireworks to impress the people. SILY has an impressive selection of nibbles where they proudly serve ‘Waffalafels’ (crispy waffle-cooked falafels served with lemon tahini sauce $10), ‘Mac N Cheese’ cooked in a waffle iron ($14), and crunchy waffle-cooked hash browns served with smoked ocean trout and crème fraiche ($16). The lunch menu, which is served weekdays from 11am-2pm, sees the SILY chefs whip up a mouth-watering cheeseburger toastie ($16), their signature smoked reuben ($16), and a mean poke bowl ($15)
“I came across Poke whilst on holiday in LA last year,” says owner Nick White.
“Having never heard of it before, I was intrigued to find Poke shacks everywhere you looked. It’s really healthy, bloody delicious, and if the east is anything to go by Sydneysiders can’t get enough.”
If you consider yourself a cocktail connoisseur or are partial to a pun, the drinks menu will not disappoint. Signature cocktails like the ‘Negronly Way Is Up’ ($20), ‘Pisco Fever’ ($18), and the ‘Single Plum Perfume Served In A Man’s Hat’ ($20) are all welcome mixtures to try. They also house an impressive wine list, including a 2014 Campinovi Sangiovese from Tuscany which has made its way onto my ‘best god-damn wines in existence’ list.
Owner Nick White has ensured there will never be a dull moment in the house by hosting weekly Tuesday trivia, live-music in the courtyard on Thursday and SILY Sessions one Sunday each month. They also have a Soundcloud and Mixcloud which both echo the venues excellent taste in music; soul, funk and hip-hop. Keep an ear to the ground for the soon-to-be-launched ‘Hip-Hop Brunch’ where guests can enjoy bottomless cocktails, a tasty lunch, and hip-hop karaoke.
To sum up, there’s nothing SILY can’t do and make sure you get the waffalafels!
