Schirrmo’s Bar: Sydney’s Most Treasured Backpacker’s Launches Entertainment-Fuelled Basement Bar Open To All

Bars, Drink, Sydney / 1 November 2022

Travellers and Sydneysiders alike can experience all the fun, games and shared stories of a backpacker’s night out, at YHA Australia’s new basement hideaway, Schirrmo’s Bar.

When we recall our best nights out, it is often the ones laden with unexpected surprises, new friends and a spirited sense of fun that we remember most fondly. While there’s no bottled formula to recreate those memorable nights, YHA Australia have mapped out the next best thing. Enter Schirrmo’s Bar, an all-new underground basement watering hole centred around connecting people in a laid-back and welcoming space, boasting a unique backdrop that’s part speakeasy, part traveller hangout.

With the heart of a dive bar, Schirrmo’s is serving up a vibrant atmosphere alongside a whole host of fun weekly events, expect outrageous drag bingo hosted by Sydney Drag Queen co, a comedy club showcasing hilarious upcoming and established local talent as well as a weekly headliner, plus live music and DJ sets featuring in-the-know drinks specials that can only be ordered when sharing Schirrmo’s secret password which is broadcasted through their Instagram page each week.

The lively lineup is accompanied by a casually-cool food and drink menu featuring boozy slushies, Pornstar Martinis on tap and satiating snacks of; Cheeseburger Spring Rolls with burger dipping sauce; Spicy Buffalo Wings coated in Sweet Baby Ray’s hickory & brown sugar; and No Cheese & Jalapeño Plant Based Bites with vegan cheddar style filling with side vegan aioli sauce.

Haymarket’s exciting new basement bar is located right next door to our Sydney Central property, and represents the group’s latest move towards bringing people together as they expand their offering to include bars and hospitality venues across Australia. The venue is also perfectly positioned for a post-work drop-in before catching the tram home.

Schirrmo’s Bar was inspired and named in honour of the great pioneer of the hostelling movement, Richard Schirrmann, who fought for friendship and harmony across borders, even in the face of wartime oppression – ideals that are particularly relevant today.

“Guests choose to stay at YHA properties to meet people and have unique experiences.” says Sam Owen, YHA Head of Development, Food & Beverage. “This is an exciting time for YHA as it allows us to create an inviting atmosphere, and give our travellers another space to connect.”

Schirrmo’s Bar is located at 4/11-23 Rawson Place, Haymarket, NSW 2000 and is currently open on Fridays 4pm-12am and Saturdays 6pm-1am with plans to operate seven days a week by the end of the year.
