Discover one of the best vegetarian cafes in Sydney, Pilgrims Bronte.
In the heart of Bronte, you’ll find the newly established Pilgrims Vegetarian Cafe. It’s the fifth outpost for the Pilgrims team, opened following the success of their original venue in Milton, then Huskisson, Cronulla and Corrimal.
Pilgrims has been around since 1980 producing wholesome and healthy goodness for breakfast, lunch, and, most recently, dinner. Bringing the South Coast up to Sydney, the Pilgrims team has opened a sun-drenched cafe in Bronte with the same consistently delicious food.
Expect their signature burgers, hearty breakfasts, and Mexican dinners, but the decor has taken an adult look and upscale feel compared to its sister venues. You’ll even score a happy hour, and live music to make this an extra special dining experience. The cafe is very chic and fitting to the Bronte streetscape, whilst also being a casual place to grab a smoothie and burger to go.
If you’re vegetarian, gluten-free, or vegan, you are well looked after at Pilgrims. Head in for brekky classics like Corn Fritters served with avocado, roast tomato, Pilgrims chilli jam and Pilgrims farmed greens ($20) or the Buttermilk Pancakes served with banana, mixed berries, yoghurt and maple syrup ($20).
We couldn’t look past the Brekky Burrito as it had everything we love on it. It comes with avocado, tomato, Pilgrims’ farmed greens, mushrooms, fried egg, halloumi, herb potatoes, Pilgrims’ pesto, hummus and sriracha on a toasted wrap ($20)– huge, healthy and delicious – loved it!
If you’re looking for a juice, you can’t pass a green juice and theirs, called the Bogey Hole, has spinach, parsley, cucumber, celery, lemon, ginger ($9).
The Pilgrims classics you’ll always see photographed are their hearty burgers. They are the staple here and you must try one if you haven’t before. I love the Millennium burger, with a curry lentil pattie, fried onion, avocado, lettuce, beetroot, cucumber, Pilgrims farmed greens, sprouts, tahini dressing and sweet chilli sauce on a toasted roll ($17).
You can even turn your burger into a wrap or bun-less burger bowl. There are plenty more flavours to try, with mixed grain patties, tofu and halloumi options. Pilgrim’s also has toasties and pies that are famed classics too.
For dinner, Pilgrims offers a Mexican vegetarian menu which features your favourites like chips and guac ($11), tacos, burritos and quesadillas. We were transfixed on the enchiladas which sound huge. They are served on a soft tortilla filled with Mexican red beans, baked and topped with tomato passata and melted cheese, served with sour cream, guacamole, salsa, refried potato and brown rice ($23).
We also liked the sound of the Chef’s special burrito filled with spinach and ricotta, refried potato, cheese, tomato salsa and avocado, wrapped in a lightly toasted tortilla, topped with passata and melted cheese ($21). There is definitely something for everyone including the kiddies, and also desserts to end the meal.
Pilgrims are definitely “healthy, wholesome and hearty” like it says on their website, and we couldn’t explain it better. We think their consistent and delicious food is the reason why they have opened five venues, and they are definitely spreading the good vibes everywhere they go.
