The Taphouse Team Breathe New Life into Petersham’s Oxford Tavern

The Taphouse expand their reach to the Inner West with the acquisition of Petersham’s beloved Oxford Tavern.

Brothers James and Josh Thorpe of Darlinghurst’s The Taphouse are now stamping their mark in Sydney’s Inner West with the addition of a second venue to their portfolio, acquiring Petersham’s iconic Oxford Tavern.

James Thorpe, Co-Founder of Thorpe Hospitality Group, said: “The Oxford Tavern has been one of our favourite Inner West venues for a long time. The pub has a rich and colourful history in the area, and whilst we will be refreshing certain elements, it is really important to us that the pub retains its incredible charm”.

With a passion for local, independent beer and breweries, the Thorpe brothers have their sights set on launching a new brewing label, with the ultimate goal of installing their very own microbrewery in the space.

Given its location in the heart of Sydney’s top breweries, Thorpe brothers profess that the new pub will be focusing exclusively on locally owned, independent breweries on tap, introducing a wide range of craft options. The pub will shine a particularly strong light on the notion of the ‘hyper local’, prefaced as breweries within a 5km radius of the pub.

Once infamous for its smoker BBQ, the new rendition of the Oxford Tavern will focus on restoring the BBQ to its former glory days. The Taphouse’s much-loved and awarded Sunday roast will also make an appearance, but with a BBQ twist. Think smoked brisket or pork belly, lashings of gravy, roast potatoes, carrots, broccoli and a Yorkshire pudding to match.

“We really want The Oxford Tavern to be inclusive and open to all. The new Tavern will be a venue that doesn’t take itself too seriously – a fun, relaxing environment with fresh, local beer, great food and all-round good times for everyone”, says Thorpe.

Thorpe Hospitality will open the doors to the new Oxford Tavern on Monday 21 January. They will spend time in the pub and getting to know the local community before commencing work on the build.

Be sure to watch this space, with further details to be announced soon.
