Celebrate the beauty of our oceans at the Ocean Photographer of the Year 2024 exhibition, opening at the Australian National Maritime Museum.
Featuring 118 breathtaking images, the competition, run by London-based Oceanographic Magazine, is now in its fifth year and has become a prestigious platform for photographers worldwide. Expert judges select winners across categories including The Ocean, Wildlife, Fine Art, Adventure, Conservation, Human Connection, Young Photographer of the Year, and the Ocean Portfolio Award. The exhibition also celebrates the Female Fifty Fathoms Award, established to highlight outstanding contributions by women in ocean photography.
Each photograph tells a story, from intimate encounters to striking displays of human connection with the ocean. Highlights include images of a Southern stingray gliding through a seagrass meadow in The Bahamas, a duck-diving surfer in the Mentawai Islands, and a vibrant mototi octopus illuminated during a blackwater dive in the Philippines.
Visitors will also see a touching shot of a seagull perched atop a sea turtle, a juvenile clownfish swarm in Jakarta, and an ethereal display of Munk’s devil rays seemingly flying through the waters of Baja California.
Daryl Karp, Director and CEO of the Australian National Maritime Museum, describes the exhibition as a call to action: “These images showcase life on, in, and around the ocean, highlighting its diversity. As Australia’s museum of the sea, we are proud to display this incredible collection and encourage visitors to reflect on their role in preserving our oceans.”
The exhibition opens on November 28th at the Australian National Maritime Museum, Darling Harbour. Visit their website for more information and book tickets here.
