Nativo Mexican Is Pyrmont’s Authentic New 14-Seat Taqueria

Eat, Restaurants, Sydney / 7 November 2022

Headed by renowned Chef Manuel Diaz (Ex-Bar Patron), Nativo Mexican might be small in capacity, but the menu showcases BIG Mexican flavour.

Sydney’s love affair with all things Mexican is showing no sign of slowing down with the announcement of El Primo Sanchez – a new Tequila bar from the Maybe Sammy team. Now, in a suburb-first, Pyrmont has scored a Mexican street food-inspired offering serving up authentic tacos and satiating snacks from a cosy 18sqm kitchen.

For a small space, owner and Chef Manuel Diaz, has managed to cram in a whole lot of personality. Channelling the lively atmosphere of Mexican streets lined with vendors, and filled with noise, Nativo Mexican is a casual, colourful, playful and vibrant addition to Pyrmont’s Harris Street.

Nativo Mexican, Pyrmont

Hailing from Oaxaca – Mexico’s gastronomic capital, Diaz has eloquently translated the honest and uncomplicated dishes of his childhood, to Sydney’s innovative dining scene. Of course, he’s had plenty of practice along the way working across many well-known Sydney restaurants including Milpa Collective Group (Sonora, Carbon, Casa Merida, Santa Catarina) and as Group Executive Chef at Circular Quay’s beloved Bar Patron.

At Nativo, (Spanish for native) Diaz draws on ideas developed by the indigenous communities and ancestors of his motherland, crafting a menu that honours traditional native cooking methods while celebrating union with the Australian community. The result is a unique fusion menu incorporating native Australian ingredients and produce.

Signature tacos showcasing this signature flavour union include; the Al Pastor Pork Shoulder Tacos with Saltbush Morita Salsa; and Zarandeado Octopus Taco featuring Tasmanian octopus, chimichurri, confit onions and potato.

From the Antojitos selection, an assortment of satiating snacks to be devoured before a big feed, the Tostada Cochinita Pibil are a must-try showcasing crunchy fried tortilla with refried beans, 12h braised pulled pork, pickled onions and citrus oil. Nativo is also one of the few places in Sydney where you can score a Jarritos, an authentic Mexican soft drink that comes in tropical guava, mango and passionfruit flavour.

Nativo Mexican is now open Tue-Sat 11:00am–8:30pm for dine-in and takeaway on Pyrmont’s Harris Street. Find out more here.
