Eat, Sydney / 14 November 2016

Travel down the Mekong without ever leaving Sydney.

Woven into the rich tapestry of Chippendale’s Kensington Street is Mekong Restaurant. The dishes at Mekong are designed to take you on a palliative journey, from Burma to Lao, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam in a single sitting. Chef Tiw Rakarin (ex Mama’s Buoi and Alphabet St) wishes to give his patrons a dining experience to remember, showcasing the very best of Indochinese cuisine.

On the A La Carte menu you’ll find tantalising food items such as squid ink dumplings, served with Thai-style crab meat and prawn stuffing ($12). A play on the old-school hors d’oeuvre ‘pigs in blankets’ is Mekong’s pig in a betel leaf blanket. Travelling far away from its tacky cocktail party origins, these incorporate Thai grilled pork neck wrapped in betel leaf, served with a house made tamarind sauce ($13). Moving onto the ‘mainland’ food list, you’ll notice an assortment of grilled and stir-fried dishes juxtaposed against richer curries with evocative titles such as Grandma in the Garden ($24) and A Duck at Sunrise ($30).

Very hungry. The banquet includes a total of 10 unique dishes starting with appetisers and travelling all the way through to dessert.
Also available is a Chefs special lunch menu. For $28, guests can choose from a variety of entrees and mains. For dessert you’ll enjoy the speciality Bangkok ice cream bowl, served with coconut ice cream, pomegranate, roasted peanuts and palm seeds in a coconut shell. Wine by the glass and bottle are also available at an extra charge.
Scanning the wine list, Mekong has on offer a variety of Australian wines designed to to accompany the nuanced flavours of every dish. Sip on a crisp glass of Pinot Grigio from the Yarra Valley, or travel down the more robust route with a glass Tempranillo sourced from the Hunter Valley.
