The Retro Metro Festival will celebrate one year of Marrickville Metro with two days of free festivities, including a food and makers market, live disco beats, bio-glitter tattooing, an arcade alleyway and more!
If you love your hair big and your video games in 8-bit, boy-oh-boy have Marrickville Metro got a line-up for you. Commencing Saturday 2nd July, the metro’s two-day festival invites Sydneysiders to partake in a host of free events, performances, and activities for the whole family.
The celebrations kick off at 10am starting with a leisurely peruse of Marrickville’s new Metro Markets on Smidmore St. There’ll be over 25 stalls offering home & interior products, fashion, jewellery, lifestyle products, art, and gourmet produce, making for a perfect pitstop to indulge in a little retail therapy and grab a gift for Christmas in July while you’re at it.
There’ll be roving retro performances woven throughout the festival adding a unique, Marrickville Metro twist to traditional roving entertainment. Think retro roller skaters, drag queens, mirror people, and disco performers each bringing a little something special to accent an incredible day.
To immortalise the day’s celebrations, guests can check-in at the Retro Metro Photo Wall. Take a throwback photo set to retro jukeboxes and seating, hot pink neon signs and a recycled artwork backdrop by local re-use centre, Reverse Garbage.
Of course no retro celebration is complete without inviting Pacman to the party. The Retro Metro Arcade Alley is your chance to set that high score you have always dreamed of. There will be two arcade alleys, one on the original side and another on the new side, giving both veterans and newcomers the opportunity to say hello to Pac-Man.
If watching Pacman chomp up those dots has you working up an appetite, head to the food sampling station where you can chomp through some bite-sized samples of your own! Featuring food sampling stations and a pop-up bar, visitors can explore a new restaurant or revisit an old-school fave. The mix of over 10 restaurants and quick bites include Rice Pantry, Nanyang Malaya, Café, Izakaya Tori, and Slim’s Quality Burger to name a few.
Attendees can boogie-woogie all night long to a feverish line-up of bands, buskers and DJs spinning classic disco hits into the evening with a mix of professional and local musicians set up across a variety of stages throughout the original and new side.
Also, featuring a highly grammable community art piece at its entrance, that doubles as a blank canvas for kids and adults to release their inner artist. The whole festival is dedicated to capturing the community spirit, and the diverse and urban lifestyle that Marrickville has become known for. Head down Saturday 2nd & Sunday 3rd July between 10am – 5pm to get in on the action.
