Frida Kahlo: Life Of An Icon will venture through an immersive visual journey of the life and works of one of the most influential artists of all time.
Art exhibitions are taking a new shape in 2022, with Van Gogh Alive set to take over the Entertainment Quarter’s Grand Pavillion this Summer, and now, Frida Kahlo’s visual biography announced to take residence at Barangaroo Reserve’s Cutaway House, immersive, multi-sensory exhibitions are becoming Sydney’s favourite way to experience the worlds most historical works of art, without a hefty plane fare.
For two months commencing January 2023, digital collections of historical photographs, original films, and captivating holography of Frida Kahlo’s work will be projected across the surface of seven awe-inspiring rooms. Included in the visual display, a virtual reality system that will literally transport you inside Kahlo’s most famous works.
The announcement comes as part of a much bigger Sydney Festival 2023 lineup, which has a distinctly female-fuelled programme. Festival highlights include an all-female composed opera-performance Sun & Sea (Lithuania) at Sydney Town Hall, Australian composer Mary Finsterer’s Antarctica, and a specially commissioned installation at South Eveleigh honouring local legend Jenny Kee.
Famed for her iconic colourful and uncompromising self-portraits which deal with themes of identity, death and the female form, the life works of feminist icon Frida Kahlo couldn’t be a more fitting headliner for a festival that celebrates the unique voices and diverse stories of artists across the globe.
The exhibition comes to Australia after touring Europe and the US, and also displaying in Canada, Puerto Rico, Israel and Brazil. Finally, it’s Sydney’s turn to be fully immersed in the colourful inspirations and pivotal moments of this 20th century icon.
Taking over Barangaroo’s large-scale underground event space at The Cutaway, the 2 month exhibition will also feature the opportunity to create your own flower crowns, turn your drawings into Frida-esque artwork and immortalise yourself through a souvenir illustrated photo, all accompanied by fresh arrangements of traditional Mexican music.
