Free hot cross buns? Yes please!

Brace yourselves, carb lovers—National Hot Cross Bun Day is officially a thing, and it’s coming in hot.

On Thursday, March 13th, Bakers Delight is giving away 150,000 of its new raspberry and white choc hot cross buns across the country. No strings attached, just free, doughy goodness.

Every Bakers Delight bakery nationwide will be handing out a free bun to the first 300 customers. No need to make a purchase—just show up and claim your freshly baked treat. This year’s limited-edition flavour is packed with real raspberries, raspberry-infused cranberries, and white chocolate chips, offering a sweet twist on the Easter favourite.

The giveaway comes as Bakers Delight releases new research uncovering exactly how Australians like to enjoy their hot cross buns. It turns out more people prefer them fresh rather than toasted, with 56 percent opting for a soft, straight-from-the-bag experience, while 44 percent prefer a golden, crispy bun. A surprisingly large portion of people—20 percent—skip the butter altogether, while 71 percent remain loyal to the traditional fruit-filled bun. Just 11 percent prefer to forgo fruit entirely.

Easter is the busiest time of year for Bakers Delight, and the numbers behind their production are staggering. From January through to April, the bakery chain will produce around 18 million hot cross buns, with 4.2 million baked during Easter week alone. If all the hot cross buns made in 2025 were lined up from end to end, they would stretch from Sydney to Los Angeles.

For one day only, customers have the chance to grab a free taste of Bakers Delight’s latest hot cross bun creation. Doors open early on Thursday, March 13th, and with only 300 buns available per store, the smart move is to get in early before they’re gone.
