Just a block or two behind Oxford Street, you will find Baccomatto Osteria, an unpretentious, authentic Italian Restaurant. It’s located inside The Cambridge Hotel on Riley Street.
With a large galley style bench in the centre of the restaurant and tables along the walls, there is plenty of premium seating at Baccomatto. Above the bar bench, are hanging shelves full of Italian wines and digestifs. The Italian waitstaff are quick to busy themselves offering wine, breads and oils to snack on whilst you peruse the short menu.
Many specials are added daily to keep the food fresh and seasonal. The pasta is made from scratch everyday, focussing on traditional Italian flavours and fresh ingredients. This is not an ‘Aussie/Italian’ restaurant with enormous portion sizes and pasta covered in sauce. Like the Italians do, the flavours are rich and the sauce is just enough to cover the pasta.
There is also a selection of tapas-style starters, charcuterie boards, cheeses, mains and desserts. It’s not quite fine dining but you wouldn’t call it rustic. It’s exactly what Sydney-siders love, an Italian vibe presented with clean lines.
It’s a little slice of Modern Italian, sitting just a stones throw away from Oxford Street. If you are looking for a room in Surry Hills, The Hotel Cambridge offers reasonably priced accommodation with city views. Then you can pop down to Baccomatto Osteria anytime.
