Sydney Fringe Festival is hosting a free after-hours street festival this weekend

Cool Sh*t, Film & Art, Play, Sydney / 11 September 2019

Enter a sensory world in the heart of Chippendale with Sydney Fringe Festival’s BABYLON.

Sydney Fringe Festival is the month long event that continues to wow attendees with its boundary pushing artistic performances, staged across some of Sydney’s most dynamic venues. This weekend, they are descending upon Kensington Street with a multi-sensory experience to remember, with the launch of BABYLON.

On Saturday 14th September from 6pm until late, you can head to Chippendale’s beloved food precinct for a free, all-ages event, promising light sculptures, live performances, music, dancing, light installations, soundscapes and projections.

Taking its cues from the ancient metropolis and one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, BABYLON promises 30+ independent performances and multi-media artists. Keep your eye out for Mekazoic, a robotics and mechatronics engineer who specialises in large-scale installation, kinetic sculpture, pyrotechnics and special effects in film. You’ll also spot Andrea Davies and Sid Sidlow, two professionals in the world of circus who work under the guise La Galerie Mobile.

There to provide the deep jungle grooves is Dollar Bin Darlings, while Rhiannon Hopley’s photography and video installation work will be on display, which is both ethereal and hauntingly beautiful. These mark just some of the many talented artists you’ll find on the night.

Having no doubt worked up a hunger, you can wander down Silk Road and sample goods from Spice Alley’s revered hawker stalls. Not only this, you can smoke a shisha under the stars, have your fortune told and sip on wine by Handpicked or an exotic mocktail from the team at Trolley’d.

Fed up with the dating apps? BABYLON is also giving you the opportunity to meet someone the quaint old way – in real life – at the Marriage Markets. This is your chance to get talking to someone in person and if you find that spark, then the first round of drinks are on Kensington Street when you dine or drink at Olio, Eastside, Mekong, Gavroche, Gin Lane or Handpicked Wines.

Sydney Fringe Festival Director Kerri Glasscock welcomes this collaboration, saying: ‘We are thrilled to be working again this year with the Kensington Street precinct and with the talented artists at Tortuga Studios. Sydney Fringe Festival is in its tenth year and we are excited to present a jungle realm in the heart of the city that is not to be missed!’
