Nikka Releases Rare Yoichi 10 Year Old Single Malt Whisky In Australia

Drink, Melbourne / 27 April 2023

Nikka, the iconic Japanese whisky maker, is set to delight Australian whisky enthusiasts with the exclusive release of its rare Yoichi 10 Year Old single malt. This refined beverage will only be available at select ultra-premium whisky and cocktail bars, ensuring a truly special experience for those fortunate enough to sample it.

Australia’s growing fondness for whisky is evident, and Nikka’s Yoichi 10 Year Old (ABV 45%) offers a limited 360 bottles for local connoisseurs to enjoy. This marks a return to age statement single malt whiskies, after Yoichi and Miyagikyo age statements were discontinued in 2015. While it will become a permanent addition to the Nikka Whisky range, its rarity ensures it will only be sold on-premise, with a dram (30ml) priced between $45-$50.

Whisky sales in Australia have seen remarkable growth, with a 50% increase in case allocations of Nikka products within the past two years. Marcus Parmenter, Nikka Whisky brand ambassador, attributes this to Australians embracing premium whiskies, making it the fastest growing spirit segment in the country.

Originally founded in 1934 as “Dai Nippon Kaju” (The Great Japanese Juice Company) by Masataka Taketsuru and his wife Rita, the Nikka brand sold apples to finance the company. Today, Nikka is distributed by Asahi Beverages and is available in over 40 countries, with Australia being one of its most established markets.

Yoichi 10 Year Old was crafted in celebration of the historic Yoichi Distillery’s declaration as one of Japan’s 10 most important cultural properties. The distillery employs traditional distillation methods, such as direct natural coal firing of the stills, a technique used by only a few whisky distillers worldwide. This process yields a Maillard reaction during distillation, resulting in a more complex and flavourful finished product.

Whisky aficionados in Australia eagerly anticipate the Yoichi 10 Year Old release, which offers a smoky, savoury malt flavour profile with fruity undertones. Achieving its deep complexity through skilful blending, extra peat, and woody notes, this whisky is a testament to the artistry and dedication required in creating an exceptional product.

The surge in demand for premium whisky in Australia is unparalleled, with tasting events selling out within minutes. A consumer tasting night is scheduled for Tuesday 9 May, offering a unique opportunity to sample some of the world’s most sought-after Japanese whiskies, expertly paired with delightful drinks and small bites.

From 8 May, the elusive Nikka Yoichi 10 Year Old will be available at select bars around Australia, including Whisky And Alement, Whisky Den, One or Two, The Everleigh, Elysian Whisky Bar, Eau De Vie, Burrow Bar, Baxter Inn, Savile Row, and Hains & Co. Don’t miss the chance to savour this extraordinary whisky experience.
