Mill Place Merchants Unveils a Nostalgic Refuge in Melbourne’s Heart

/ 23 April 2024

Take a short stroll down Mill Place from Flinders Lane, and you’ll uncover Mill Place Merchants, the city’s latest speakeasy. Hidden behind an old mirror, this spot fuses the glamour of a bygone era with today’s lively bar scene.

Step through the monogrammed red door and a former dressing room welcomes you to Mill Place Merchants. Here, remnants of the garment era—mannequins and fabric rolls—whisper the building’s rich history. Yet, the grand mirror at the end of the room steals the show, doubling as a gateway to the enchanting world beyond.

EAT: Flavours Rich in Stories

Chef Deepak Mishra delights diners with his innovative menu. Sample his Mini Steak Onion & Ale Pie, where zesty mustard blends with sweet honey and sharp horseradish aioli. Or try the devilled eggs, topped with Yarra Valley salmon roe, offering a taste of local excellence. Mishra crafts each dish to celebrate the region’s culinary heritage with a modern twist.

DRINK: Cheers to the Classics

The bar, crowned with shining copper, is where Giancarlo Mancino works his mixology magic. Celebrating cocktail legends like Jacques Straub and Dick Bradsell, he offers creations such as the gin-based Opera and the bourbon-infused Millionaire. Each cocktail pays tribute to the masters, with a splash of local spirit and homemade garnishes. Here, every drink is a celebration.

PLAY: Melodies of Yore and Now

The evening begins with the mellow tunes of jazz and blues, setting a laid-back mood. Later, as the night progresses, lively swing music fills the air, reminiscent of the roaring speakeasies of old. This blend of music transforms the space, making it as vibrant as it is tranquil.

Paawan Engineer, the brains behind this venture, envisions it as a haven for making new friends and cherishing old ones. “Stepping through the secret mirror is like entering a community gathering,” he explains. “It’s all about forging lasting bonds and creating joyful moments.”

Mill Place Merchants is a tribute to Melbourne’s storied past, seamlessly merging it with the excitement of today’s social scene. As this speakeasy becomes a favourite local hideaway, it’s clear that the city’s most fascinating stories are often hidden right in plain sight.
