Girl Next Door brings sexy back to Fitzroy Street’s brekky scene

While the cocktail bars and live music venues have the nights covered on Fitzroy Street, new breakfast joint Girl Next Door is bringing breakfast back with a deliciously different menu.
Nestled inside the ground floor of St Kilda’s artwork-adorned Tolarno Hotel, this new eatery is reviving the breakfast scene in Fitzroy Street with fresh, seasonal food.
Owners Ben Thompson and Sylvan Spatarel, the duo behind Sauced Pasta Bar, are working with Council along with other local traders to reinvigorate Fitzroy Street.
The once-prime location has taken a back seat to nearby Acland Street in recent years as the area’s main café scene. Girl Next Door aims to entice locals and visitors back to the street with it’s new and inventive menu.
The Chef at the helm of the menu, Ben’s brother Alex Thompson (previously at Maze Grill), has created a menu of fitspo-inspired breakfast fare and hearty soul-feeding dishes.

Smoothies don’t come healthier than the honey mint concoction. It’s a blend of honeydew melon, coconut milk, fresh mint, lime juice and a drizzle of honey. The melon keeps the texture light and not as heavy on the belly as some smoothies. You can also choose from a banana and cinnamon or watermelon crush smoothie.
The breakfast bowls are an inventive and delicious alternative to everyone’s favourite bircher muesli. The Green Breakfast Bowl consists of coconut cream, vanilla and basil infused ricotta, layered with kiwi fruit and grapes and sprinkled with pistachio, chia crumble, bee pollen and flakes of coconut. You feel healthier just reading that, don’t you?
The White and Pink Breakfast Bowls are equally as tempting and feature lychee and banana (white) or dragonfruit and strawberries (pink).
Girl Next Door homemade granola
If granola is your breakfast of choice, try the homemade roasted nut recipe with raspberry coulis, seasonal fruit, natural yoghurt and honey. It looks just as good as it tastes.
If you’re like me and your tastebuds play tug-o-war between the choice of a sweet or savoury breakfast, you’ll be torn between both sides of this menu.
The Pulled Beef Sandwich takes the breakfast toastie to another level. Eight-hour roasted beef brisket is shredded between two pieces of toasted sourdough and layered with melted cheddar, chipotle and spinach. Oh hello!

The standout dish though is the appropriately named Best Beans Around. Slow cooked fagioli beans and salami picante are simmered in a sauce of heirloom tomatoes and dotted with fresh chunks of mozzarella, served with grilled sourdough. The rich, smoky flavours and the subtle creamy hit of mozzarella are the stuff that breakfast dreams are made of.
If you’re with a mate or a date who’s into sharing, the beans are superb served alongside the pulled beef sandwich. Sides are also available to order with bacon, chorizo, eggs and avocado making it onto the list.
For those that like their first meal of the day on the lighter side, there’s a selection of fresh muffins, baked in-house. Flavours include lime and coconut or white chocolate and macadamia.
Girl Next Door Cornetto Croissants
There are also fresh, flaky, French-as-can-be croissants served with butter and jam. Perfect little pastries to accompany your morning coffee.
With your belly full of goodness, it’s only a five-minute stroll down to St Kilda beach where you can walk off your breakfast and ponder your next move.
