Pedal over to Bobbie Peels this June for a wine journey like no other. North Melbourne’s favourite pub is set to offer a spectacular array of wines in its Tour de Vino event, celebrating the flavours of the renowned Tour de France. From Saturday, 29 June, to Monday, 24 July 2024, wine lovers can sample exceptional drops from regions the peloton passes through, all in a cosy and welcoming atmosphere.

A Celebration of French Wine and Cycling

The Tour de Vino is a unique opportunity for both wine enthusiasts and cycling fans. With wines available by the glass or half glass, you can enjoy Europe’s finest without committing to a full bottle. The event, curated by Beaune and Beyond along with Bobbie Peels’ co-owner Phil Gisjbers, features stellar selections from Burgundy’s Domaine Robert Groffier, Champagne House André Clouet, and the Loire Valley’s Le Rocher des Violettes.

French-Inspired Delights

Throughout the 21-day event, guests will not only enjoy exquisite wines but also French-inspired snacks. Grower Champagne, crafted by the estate that grows the grapes, will be on offer, providing a genuine taste of French craftsmanship.

Kicking Off with Italy

The Tour de Vino starts at noon on Saturday, 29 June, ahead of the cyclists’ Grand Départure at 8 pm Melbourne time. This year marks the first time in its 111-year history that Le Tour begins in Italy. Expect to savour remarkable Italian wines from Guido Porro and Querciabella, accompanied by Bobbie Peels’ renowned hand-rolled pastas.

Meet the Passionate Host

Phil Gijsbers, a WSET-certified wine lover with a penchant for cycling, is eager to share his knowledge and passion. His hospitality approach is all about making guests feel at home, whether discussing the nuances of Chablis or the challenges of Le Tour’s Stage Seventeen.

Gijsbers believes that appreciation doesn’t require expertise. “Le Tour de France and wine are perfect examples of simple pleasures anyone can enjoy,” he says. “Who wouldn’t love watching a road race through the French countryside with a glass of fine wine?”

The Enthusiasts’ Perspective

John Barr, Account Manager at Beaune and Beyond, praises the Tour de Vino concept. “The winemakers we feature are masters, just like the cyclists. It’s a joy to pair their creations with the world’s most prestigious race.”
