We were recently invited to an intimate Chef’s Table event at Old City Kitchen & Bar in Newtown. Hosted by Executive Chef Chrys Xipolitas, it was a chance for him to show off the innovative mouth-watering dishes from his new Mediterranean-inspired menu. So what did we think? Read on.

Every element of each dish on is prepared on site from scratch at Old City Kitchen & Bar. The menu is inspired by the tastes of Jerusalem and surrounding countries, making it in a unique dining experience. The main focus of the menu is seafood, resulting in some delicious combinations like the braised BBQ octopus, which is tossed in cherry tomatoes, Spanish onion, olives, roquette, basil and dressed in a sweet chilli balsamic.

Guests were treated to an array of entrees including the delectable zucchini flowers, bathed in a light tempura batter and served with flavoursome grated pecorino cheese, white truffle oil and lime zest.

For a light starter, we recommend the island salad, which is a simply delicious blend of tomatoes, cucumbers, shallots, fresh mint, chilli, garlic, baby capers, Spanish onion, crispy pita pieces, red wine vinegar and olive oil topped with a feta foam.

New to the menu are the New City prawns and calamari, which will delight all seafood lovers. Shallow fried in potato starch, seasoned with fresh chilli, salt, pepper, garlic and parsley and served with special dipping sauce, you’ll never have to choose between prawns and calamari again.

The homemade halloumi, is the pride and joy of Chyrs’ repertoire, and topped with fresh mint and grape salsa, dressed with a balsamic glaze. He swears on his life that not once in fourteen years has anybody said this isn’t the best, softest and most delectable halloumi they have ever tasted.

An ancient region called Levantine influences Old City’s interiors, menu and ambience. Also known as the Levant, this covers the Mediterranean part of the Middle East, such as Jordan, Lebanon and Israel. Old City Kitchen & Bar are passionate about recreating old family recipes, such as the chargrilled spatchcock, served on a spinach and halloumi pilaf, finished in a chicken lemon broth.
