It’s that time of year, the annual Mardi Gras Festival is back on! Celebrating its 40th anniversary, the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Parade is set to be more glitter loaded and fabulous than ever before. The parade marks the fantastic finale to the festival, but there is so much more happening in and around Sydney! From theatre productions to pool parties, here’s your ultimate guide to this iconic LGBTQI+ festival.
Heaps Gay Queertopia Pardi Gras 2018
Indie Westie Party Starters Heaps Gay are transforming Manning Bar in Chippendale into a party spectacular! With AGWA de Bolivia as the proud sponsor of the Queertopia party, guests can expect an all immersive and inclusive festival of AGWA de Bolivia-inspired drinks, music, art and performances featuring local Aussie acts across 3 stages! THE MARDI GRAS PARADE
The 40th Annual Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade is so close you can almost see the glitter! Tens of thousands of fabulous participants will be strutting, singing and dancing in the streets for one spectacular night of entertainment. Bars along Oxford Street and Flinders Street will be selling seats at a premium price to get you right next to the action, in the spirit of the festival and provide the cocktails.

Ivy Pool Party
To celebrate summer whilst looking glamorous, consider spending the day at the Ivy Pool Club Party. An exclusive party in the heart of Sydney above suspecting eyes. As with all good adult pool parties, there will be beats and booze. Think cocktails, DJ’s, palm trees, cabanas and lots of sexy people! The line up of DJ’s will be announced soon so keep your eyes on the Mardi Gras website. This party is selling fast, with the last round of pre-sale tickets on sale now.

Della Hyde, Darlinghurst
Underground bar Della Hyde have teamed up with Absolut Vodka to create six exclusive cocktails that represent the colours of the rainbow! There’s everything from a red vodka negroni to a yellow hued passion drop – made with Absolut Vodka, Elderflower, Sauv Blanc, lemon, passionfruit and peach puree.

The Winery hosts Friends of Dorothy Mardi Gras Celebration
Surry Hills’ beloved Winery is hosting a six day celebration this Mardi Gras, and want you to come celebrate! The party kicks off on Wednesday 28th Feb with an event not to be missed – A Night with Rhys Nicolson. Tickets are just $99, and include a night of stand up comedy, beer, wine and canapés from 7pm-10pm. The Winery are also offering $99 Mumm Champagne Magnums on Thursday and Friday from 6pm-9pm and are inviting everyone to party on come Friday and Saturday with DJs spinning tunes from 7:30pm.
On Sunday 4th March, guests can expect live music and $10 Spritzes all afternoon, starting from 2:30pm. Monday is all about recovery at The Winery with complimentary canapés from 3-5pm, cocktail specials running all day and double steak fritz from 5pm until sold out.

Beresford Sundays and ABSOLUT: We Are Colourful
The Beresford Hotel has long been celebrated as an iconic destination for the LGBTQI community. Teaming up with ABSOLUT, they’ve now launched an exciting new ‘We Are Colourful’ campaign. The celebration comes with a new Sunday brunch menu. Running every Sunday from 11am-1pm until the end of March, the Beresford are offering a bespoke brunch feast, alongside a range of Absolut cocktails for just $40.
Come Sunday 25th Feb, The Beresford will also be hosting a special Absolut Sunday. This special edition Beresford Sunday will showcase special performances by diva house legend Barbara Tucker and New York City disco house DJ and Laneway party regular, Corey Craig.
Absolut and Merivale are also releasing the official Mardi Gras cocktail, Absolut Sparkle. The truly outrageous pink tipple, featuring Absolut Blue, Mojo Strawberry and Hibiscus Kombucha, passionfruit and prosecco, can be purchased exclusively during the Mardi Gras season across a number of Merivale venues including The Beresford, Queens Hotel, Vic on the Park, Ms.Gs and The Paddington.

Culture Up at The Australian Museum
On February 28th the iconic Australian Museum will present Culture Up Late: Another View – a special evening of performance, activations and art. LGBTQI+ artists will explore new museum perspectives through performance, tours and other thought provoking happenings. Not only can you see ‘Lady Sings It Better’ perform live, but also discover the Museum’s major exhibition Mammoths, and be immortalised by Sam Leighton-Dore in his live art installation.

The Tudor’s Drag Dog Dress-up Party
Redfern’s The Tudor Hotel are getting in on the party action…with a pooch party! Come Sunday 24th February, you can get involved in a drag dog-dress up party, giving your pooch the chance to don their most elaborate outfit. With prizes for best dressed, all owners of dressed-up doggos will receive a complimentary margarita.

Queer Art After Hours @ Art Gallery of NSW
After last year’s inaugural event, Queer Art After Hours is returning to the Art Gallery of NSW. You can expect an explosion of queer art around every corner, along with queer musicians, DJs and performers. Elsewhere in the Gallery, take a tongue-in-cheek art tour with Verushka Darling, a life drawing class with dominatrix Mistress Tokyo as your model, or have a profound coffee cup reading with artist Nicole Barakat.
