Majestic Harvest

Cafes, Eat, Sydney / 24 August 2015
In recent years Sydney’s inner west has brought everything to the table. In keeping with this trend is Petersham’s newest offering; Majestic Gourmet Grocer and restaurant, Majestic Harvest. The buzz about this new foodie location has been building for over nine months as the iconic, heritage-listed Majestic Theatre underwent extensive renovation. The grand, art deco style entrance hints at the site’s long history that dates back to 1912 when the Queen’s Movie Theatre originally opened. Since then a 1970s ice-skating disco rink has occupied the space… and now the story continues!

Majestic’s Gourmet Grocer is designed to transport guests to a open, European-style marketplace. The large, open front entrance is decorated with floral arrangements available to purchase from the in-house florist. Past the peonies is a juice bar and salad counter for convenient, healthy workday takeaways. No gourmet venue would be complete without an extensive meat and cheese counter – abundant with all the ingredients for a perfect charcuterie board. Fresh seafood is supplied by the fish counter, as well as takeaway fish and chips options. A bakery sells produce supplied by the Bread and Butter Project, as well as treats baked in-house (don’t look past the warm Portuguese tarts). Majestic also stocks a selection of Mediterranean inspired imported goodies and deli favourites.

Until licensing for the wine bar is approved, the downstairs restaurant is specialising in breakfast and lunch. Head Chef Steve Wellstead (formerly of Balmain’s London Hotel) serves up light Italian and Greek inspired dishes like salt and pepper calamari ($14) and fresh zucchini flowers with ricotta, pine nuts, basil, burnt butter muscatel and lemon ($15).

For something a bit more substantial the spaghetti with prawns, zucchini, chilli ($18) is a zingy favourite. The Potato gnocchi with burnt sage butter, gorgonzola ($16) is a rich and powerful dish –  we suggest sharing. Whether you’re in the neighbourhood looking for picnic supplies or want to pop-in for weekend brunch, rest assured, you won’t be walking out empty handed (or with an empty stomach!)
