Handpicked Cellar Door is the new wine haven on Kensington Street you have to visit
Kensington Street in Chippendale can do no wrong right now. The booming foodie precinct is drawing crowds for a multitude of reasons. From the buzzing afterwork crowd at Spice Alley to the queue snaking out the door of Koi dessert bar and more. The latest addition is one of huge proportions and has enough wine to service the entire street ten times over. Popular winery Handpicked Wines has opened a cellar door on the strip bringing its distinctive global wine experience to the heart of Sydney at the Handpicked Cellar Door.
Located on the corner of Kensington and Outram Streets wine lovers of all experience are invited to visit the new urban winery. From novice drinkers to experienced wine connoisseurs, those looking to up their wine education or anyone looking for a great spot can grab a drink after work. Taste wines from around Australia and the world in one central place. Handpicked Wines pride themselves on ‘hand picking’ the world’s best regions and varietals to showcase. From Margaret River cabernet, chardonnay from the Yarra Valley to delicious pinot noir from New Zealand’s Central Otago.
The beautifully designed warehouse features exposed-brick and a lot of light wood. Walls of wine line the room with tasting stations the main feature as you first enter the former CUB brewery workshop. The space expands over 300 square metres and has a meeting room and hot desks available for use. It’s a unique approach to cellar doors which are typically found onsite at a vineyard.
At the Handpicked Cellar Door you can attend tastings at the sensory bar or 30-minute tutored tastings in the Experience Room. You can also taste unfinished wines from the wine tanks that line the space, plus order small batch wines on tap.
Sit back with some cheese and charcuterie curated by Surry Hills-based specialists, Formaggi Ocello and wine by the glass or bottle. You can also order craft beer and cider. Then the best part is you can take away your favourite drop to savour later or wander down to one of the BYO restaurants on Kensington Street and enjoy straight away. You can also jump online anytime and have wine delivered anywhere in the Sydney metro area within three hours!
The Experience Room at the back of the cellar door seats up to 20 people and is great for private functions and tastings. A team of sommeliers and wine educators are on hand to host guests throughout the experience.
This is the second city cellar door we’ve come across in Sydney. Earlier this year Cake Wines opened a cellar door in Redfern which has been met with a great response. We think these innovative wine brands are one to something. Who needs a weekend trip to the Hunter Valley when you can access all the cellar door action here at home!
