Eat Drink Play Contributor’s Reveal Their Favourite Sydney Burger

House prices, public transport and burgers, these are a few of Sydney’s favourite things to debate. And while we can’t help you with the first two, we’ll do our darnedest with the latter. Sydney does love a good burger, there are just so many, delicious offerings around. On a mission to find the best, we asked out contributors: What’s your favourite Sydney burger?


Ms Darlinghurst’s Favourite: Rockpool Bar & Grill Burger

This is such a tough question because I LOVE burgers and we are really spoilt for choice in Sydney. I recently tried Ze Pickle‘s classic chee-ze burger and that was pretty damn good. I also tried Brooklyn Depot  just around the corner in Surry Hill and their Fuhgeddaboudit it burger was the perfect, sloppy hangover cure I needed that Sunday. But for me, my all time favourite burger is the Rockpool Bar and Grill burger. I love taking a seat in the bar, ordering a great bottle of red to share with a friend and eating one of their David Blackmore’s Full Blood Wagyu burgers. It comes with bacon, gruyere cheese and zuni pickle. The wagyu patty is amazing (and at $26 a pop you’d hope so). I always get a side of hand cut chips with wagyu gravy $18. It is so consistent, I always know what I’m going to get and it’s more of an Aussie style burger rather than the American inspired ones that are so popular at the moment.

Anita’s Favourite: Mary’s Burger at The Unicorn Hotel

An oldie but a goodie, the Mary’s burger has well and truly reach iconic status in Sydney. The meteoric rise of this humble tomato, lettuce, cheese, onion, beef pattie offering arguably singlehandedly transformed the city’s burger culture. Spanning many a American-style copycat in the process. Years later burger fever still refuses to subside.

Not content being the burger lifeblood of beatnik-dripping Newtown, Mary’s expanded its soft bun empire by opening an outpost in the CBD, and then again when it combined forces with the boys from Young Henry’s and Porteño at Paddo’s The Unicorn Hotel. Maybe it’s the venue, maybe it’s the wine list, or maybe it’s simply the vibe of the thing, the Mary’s burger just tastes better at The Unicorn. But wherever, however you source it, you can’t really call yourself a Sydney-sider if you haven’t tried one. That sauce! Truly a great Sydney burger.

Sydney Burger - Lord of the Fries

Anne’s Favourite: Original Burger at Lord of the Fries

Insert the terms ‘ Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten-free, Kosher and Halal certified’ before the word ‘burger and it may be mistaken for a comedy routine. How can a vegetable-based burger possibly compare with beef patties, melted cheese and maple bacon? The competition is stiff, however in my opinion Lord of the Fries is a worthy opponent.

This hole-in-the-wall burger joint spread its buns in Sydney in late 2013, and the queues have remained out the front since its opening day. Offering ethical burgers, hot dogs, chips and snack packs, meat-eaters will be simultaneously confused and drooling. My top three picks are the ‘Original’ burger, ‘Chicago’ dog and ‘Classic’ chips, topped with any of the 12 sauces which are good enough to bathe in.

Lord of the Fries is my late-night feed of choice, but this fast food tastes good whether you’ve had a few drinks or not.

Ben’s Favourite: The Hombre at Chef’s Kitchen
The Hombre is a monster to come to grips with, literally. In addition to two deliciously thick cold smoked patties, the Hombre oozes with beef chilli and melted cheese. Throw in pickled jalapeno sour cream, guacamole, lettuce and tomato, and it becomes simply impossible to contain all the ingredients inside the burger buns. Not that we mind having to lick our fingers as a result!
Most importantly however, Chef’s Kitchen is located just down the road from the Royal North Shore Hospital, so you can check yourself into the ER when the inevitable heart attack begins. Worth it.

Olivia’s Favourite: Simon Says at Grill’d

I’m not the biggest burger lover but if I am to go for one it’s Simon Says from Grill’d. On a traditional wholemeal bun, it makes for a delicious mouthful of all the basics including chicken and avocado. I also opt for an added slice of pineapple. And while I normally struggle to finish a whole burger, this one goes down a treat! But you must always have a side of fries, however Grill’d doesn’t have fries so chips it is and I’m keen on either regular or sweet potato, the perfect partner.

Sydney Burger - Baoger

Sanjana’s Favourite: ice cream baoger from One Tea Lounge

My favourite burger in Sydney was a bit tough to define, so I went for my favourite dessert burger which is the Green Tea and Black Sesame Baoger from One Tea Lounge. The dessert comes out in slider size with a sweet, crispy, warm, fried, brioche bun (amazing) and either green tea or black sesame ice cream fillings. A smear of sweet red bean paste coats the bun and voila! The small tasty desserts are a standout and contender in Sydney’s best burgers.

Lauren’s Favourite: Bandito burger from The Rook 

Who doesn’t love a good rooftop bar? Don’t be fooled by the business-like foyer or dingy elevator, The Rook is a CBD hotspot. Think fairy lights, all encompassing glass ceiling, funky contemporary art and constantly buzzing atmosphere. They also happen to do a killer burger! Of late, it seems I can’t go past a good fusion meal. I also love spicy food, a lot. I knew almost instantly that the Bandito burger was for me. Chilli bean wagyu, guacamole, fresh tomato, lettuce and chipotle are cosily nestled between two lightly toasted buns. The patty itself is juicy and packed with Mexican spices. Using guacamole in a burger seems ingenious, and acts as a necessary cooling agent in the face of the fiery chipotle sauce. Burgers are served on sheets of old-school newspaper and come with a generous mountain of wedges. Ordering the Bandito will get you some oh-so-tasty spicy wedges, but all other Rook burgers come with truffle fries, how gourmet! If you’re like me, you’ll be requesting extra hot sauce to complement your side of creamy aioli. Wash it all down with a Pacifico cerveza and I can promise you’ll be in total heaven.

Zoe’s Favourite: chicken burger at Out of The Blue

This eastern suburbs favourite has found its way onto the locals map. A real gem that serves good, hearty burgers, an array of homemade sauces and generous servings of hot chips. Their burgers pack so much flavour and goodness into one punch they’d knock out Mayweather in one round. Forget about the lines for Lo-Fi on a Saturday Night, if you really know what’s up you’ll be lining up for that moment one of these beauties lands hot and juicy in your hands. The chicken burger, crumbed and golden on a sesame bun, is a popular favourite, although the Beef Burger and Vegetarian Burger make for some saucy competition. Speaking of sauces, the Chilli Mayo is this insiders hot tip. See you there on Sunday.
