OpenAir Cinema at Mrs Macquaries Point
Life in Sydney goes by so quickly it’s easy to forget just how magical this city really is. Living in the east we are spoilt for choice with new cafés, bars and restaurants opening every week, you start taking this lifestyle for granted. But every now and then you get a glimpse of Sydney in a different light, I call it the ‘Stop, Stare and Smile’ moment where Sydney smacks you in the face and says “hey pay attention you ungrateful person, I’m beautiful and don’t you know it”.
Last week my friend Matt had tickets to see Avatar at St George OpenAir Cinema at Mrs Macquaries Point and invited me along. I’ve been to outdoor cinemas before, namely Moonlight Cinema at Centennial Park and despite the mosquitoes it’s usually a fun affair. Arriving at OpenAir Cinema is a different experience and my expectations were quickly blown away by the incredible view and sophisticated set up. No picnic baskets and beanbags in sight we walked a red carpet to find our seats as the sun set behind the big screen.
This is not a BYO event and with such a great bar selection and healthy gourmet catering it’s not worth packing your own supplies. Set to the side of the screen the bar served a great selection of wine, we opted for a Domaine Chandon Pinot Gris. The catering was fresh and smelt great, Matt had a Korean beef salad with kimchi, shredded carrot, shallots, glass noodles and sesame dressing. Not expecting such vairety I had already eaten so went straight for desert with a delicious poached pear panna cotta.
Avatar has been talk of the town and unfortunately it wasn’t in 3D (I was really looking forward to wearing those pimp glasses). The movie was good, with notable political undertones throughout and amazing special effects. I did start to lose interest towards the end though and found myself gazing past the screen. The moonlight was bouncing off the water and onto the Sydney Opera house and Harbour bridge. With a view like that even the latest blockbuster would find it hard to compete.
Sadly OpenAir Cinema at Mrs Macquaries Point has finished screenings for 2010 but if you’re after some outdoor cinema fun you can still catch a movie at Ford Fiesta Moonlight Cinema in Centennial Park until 14th March. Be sure to pencil in Mrs Macquaries Point for next year, it’s a ‘Stop, Stare & Smile’ moment you won’t want to miss.
