The Ultimate Guide to Sydney Markets

Food Guide, Play, Sydney / 27 May 2013

Ah, markets. Nothing puts a bigger smile on our faces than snagging a bargain. There’s almost nothing you can’t find at markets, if you look hard enough. There’s old clothes (erm, we mean vintage), artwork, zines, bric-a-brac, jewellery, pottery, food, music, books and so much more.
Trust us, going to the markets and returning with something valuable is a serious skill. Alas, we can’t teach you the skills and ways of how to get the best products from a market. What we can teach you is where the best markets are, and what they’re good for.

Glebe Markets

Good for: vintage fashion, jewellery, the best gozleme, music, books, entertainment

glebe

With its alternative style and character, Glebe is your go-to market for rare finds and vintage clothing that you know no one else will have. It’s got some stunning one-off jewellery pieces, as well as classic books and records. Don’t forget to try the gozleme there, it is delicious. Then sit on the lawn, soak up some rays and listen to the live bands perform.

The Rocks Markets

Good for: All things Aussie, jewellery, handbags, cosmetics, candles and food
the rocks
The Rocks Markets truly are the place to go if you’re looking for any and all things Aussie. Most notably is the groovy  and interesting Australian artwork, often disguising itself in wine holders, placemats and coasters. It’s also got some one-off jewellery pieces, nothing too flash, mostly costume jewellery. If you make it to the end of the markets without buying at least one gourmet food product which has been offered by a persuasive vendor, then you’ve done well.

Paddy’s Markets is arguably the ultimate market. It’s got everything you could ever need, albeit not always great quality, but that’s beside the point. It’s got your fresh food, fried food, cheap clothes, wigs, bric-a-brac, cosmetics, yapping toy dogs, lots more kids toys, handbags and is probably the best place to find a costume for a dress-up party.
