Bizaare Bazaar

[ 2 ] July 6, 2011 |

Tired of another Thursday night shopping at the same soulless shopping centres filled with rack after rack of identical clothes and accessories? Feel like going somewhere fun where you can find a more individual style and meet with a local designer, all while listening to some great music and maybe having a relaxed drink? That sounds too hard, if not impossible.

Luckily, A Series of Fortunate Events founder Chris McLaren has done all the hard work for you by creating Bizarre Bazaar, a monthly event springing up in lanes and empty spaces around the CBD. Chris has hand-picked a diverse group of designers and collections, ranging from handmade jewellery and leather goods, eco-friendly clothing, vintage collections, intriguing accessories and enough beautiful pieces to make your credit card glad it’s only once a month!

July’s event was held in Sussex lane – tucked away parallel to Erskine Street at the intersection of Sussex Street. All the visitors were greeted with a smile and a goodie bag full of information and vouchers. The laneway was filled with marquees and decorated with strings of black and white undergarments while overhead lanterns swayed in the breeze.

The crowd was vibrant yet decidedly relaxed; you’re in no danger of losing an ankle to a rogue shopping trolley here. The designers are friendly and happy to talk to you about their pieces, help you try things on, and find you that special something that no one else has.

Don’t worry if your shopping partner has more stamina than you: treat yourself to a relaxing massage at Unwind, have a blow-dry and style at Kevin McKenzie hair (I did!) or simply have a glass of wine and cheer from the sidelines while you watch the happy crowd go by.

You can find out where the next event will be held by going to the website – http://www.bizarrebazaar.info/ or by following the team on twitter at @asofevents
