Hospitality juggernaut Merivale has a new whisky bar. Located on the second level of the Angel Hotel, J&M is an intimate, sumptuous speakeasy that aims to celebrate the ‘unique, sensory whisky experience’.
J&M pays tribute to the late John Hemmes, his wife Merivale, and their fashion outlet House of Merivale that once resided in the historic hotel. The building’s rich fashion history is reflected in the bar’s rich green velvets, sleek brown leathers, and copper accents. J&M also features bespoke haberdashery cabinets. Enchantingly, each are filled with the ingredients that make up Chivas 18, including dried fruits, buttery toffee and dark chocolate. Also check out the luxurious chesterfield sofas, the long glass bar, and ‘The Sidecar’, a specially imported drinks trolley crafted by Moore & Giles and barman Jim Meehan.
Initially launching as a Chivas Regal showcase, whisky lovers will be delighted to see that J&M’s drinks list bring to life the meticulously blended flavour notes of Chivas 18. You can also enjoy the ever-changing list of specially-crafted cocktails. Like the ‘Modern Gentleman’ made with Chivas Regal 18yo, Antica Formula, burnt oak and apricot infused Campari and a cold drip ice sphere. Or for a more unusual drink, try the ‘POPSCOF’ with buttered popcorn washed Chivas Regal 18yo, with salted caramel syrup, bitters and Himalayan salt. They also have a list of local and international wines on offer.
If you’re feeling peckish, take a look at the short menu of small dishes and snacks. It’s a nod to the 60s and 70s with lots of kitsch bites and toothpicks. Think smoked oysters served on crackers with cream cheese, meatballs with tomato relish and smoked Polish sausage with cubes of aged cheddar. Group Executive Chef, Richard Purdue says the menu is designed to be tongue-in-cheek. “The brief I got was to offer a premium-quality snack with a ’70s vibe. I looked back to what my parents served at their parties in the ’70s when I was a child. I simply made sure that we used the best possible ingredients,” explains Richard.
