The Eathouse Diner

[ 2 ] March 10, 2011 |

There’s no school uniform wearing middle aged actors or flamin mongrels hanging around this diner but The Eathouse Diner sure has a comical element much more appealing than the Summer Bay icon. Head slightly off the trendy track of Surry/Darlo and Redfern is too becoming a destination for in-the-know foodies.

You won’t find stodgy burgers and thick-shakes on the chalkboard menu at Eathouse Diner, instead I suggest you start with the duck liver pate with sweet and sour onion ($18). For an authentic diner experience sit at the front bench and have the friendly, rockabilly staff knock you up a cocktail or two.

While you’re there play spot the quirkiest object on the back bar. Perhaps it’s the mini sombrero, foxtail or kangaroo bar mat? Maybe it’s the retro furniture or the Daffy Duck icecream board no doubt picked up from an old carnival or school canteen. It almost makes you want to leave something old school and strange just to join the fun.

You can’t book at Eathouse Diner and the secret is definitely out on this place so be prepared to head across the road for some pub trivia and a pint at the Woolpack Hotel while you wait. It’s worth it. Watch out Colleen, the team at this diner are fun and friendly, though who doesn’t love a good gossip?

The food is fresh and there’s a nice selection on the menu. The pate was sensational though the caramel pork hock ($22) a little dry and spanner crab salad ($22) a little soggy. But bloody oath I’ll be back and hot on my list to try is the banana split with orange cake figs and honey syrup! You’d have to be a flamin galah not to try this place.

  1. I ended up waiting at the Woolpack an entire night one Friday… Oh well, they do a big bowl of wedges that go down well with schooners…

  2. I was lucky enough to go to Eathouse with the one and only Ms Darlinghurst and all I can say is…AMAZE !!

The food was seriously delicious and the staff were wonderful.

Can’t go past the duck liver pate with sweet and sour onion! Mouth watering…
