Pocket Bar

[ 3 ] December 14, 2009 |

This year my friends threw me a ‘surprise’ party for my birthday. I asked them to. Over the years I’ve realised that the stress of planning a birthday party often out weighs fun on the night. This year I decided to pass the stress on to my friends, after all aren’t birthdays meant to be all about celebrating and spoiling…well you?

I sent them an email “my birthday guest list…should you decide to throw me a surprise party”. But as the weeks rolled on I began to get a little nervous…what if they hadn’t organized anything, what if no one turned up, what if I spent my birthday alone (signal violins and channel Bridget Jones Diary New Years Eve moment).

Come B-Day I was taken Brown Sugar in Bondi for breakfast then spent the day playing in the sand, sipping sgroppino’s (vodka and lemon gelato), campari & blood orange juice and nibbling raw peanuts at North Bondi Italian. By 6pm we were back at mine sipping cocktails and nibbling cheese when the girls finally disclosed the evening plans- Hooray they really had organized a party for me!!

Surprise Party 09 at Pocket Bar, Darlinghurst

The Venue: Like the name suggests Pocket Bar is tucked in to a small space on the corner of Burton St and Crown St. The exposed red brick walls covered in large graffiti like art and wrought iron gates make it look like someone’s converted their garage in to a cool bar. Mismatched antique looking couches are perfect to sink in to for a birthday chat and they have a giant fan to not only keep you cool in summer but make your hair all wind swept for photos!

The Crowd: Other than my friends who came to wish me a happy birthday, Pocket Bar usually has an older crowd of people and a really relaxed laid back atmosphere.

The Staff: The staff are all pretty friendly. I think one of the bartenders bears an uncanny resemblance to Steve Carell and the guy at the front door caused a bit of a fuss in his tight wife beater and bulging biceps. I’m sure he must take lots of girls numbers but silly boy should try and avoid messaging 2 girls who are friends on the same night…Oh no he didn’t! Yeah…he did. Not me thankfully.

The Drinks: In typical birthday fashion at no point was I without a drink in hand and often it was in the form of a watermelon martini. The martini’s at Pocket are amazing but be warned, they may taste like plain watermelon juice but they are deadly…same goes for the moijtos!

The Food: Unfortunately I was too busy talking (and drinking) that I forgot to eat but my friends did order some amazing looking crepes. You can order sweet or savoury! At about midnight we headed to the Cross where I danced until the wee hours of the morning…not much difference from my 19th birthday really!
