Gay Bash
Oxford Hotel, Darlinghurst
This blog is dedicated to the endless possibilities and excitement of the east, but going out 5 nights week in Sydney’s Eastern suburbs can have its drawbacks.
- All eat, drink and no play makes Jack (or Ms Darlinghurst) a fat boy (or girl).
- You’re bank balance gets a brutal beating.
- You run the risk of seeing the same people over and over again.
Luckily there’s a gym and happy hour to combat the first two points but the thirds a little trickier. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining and Sydney’s East certainly has a plethora of venues to feed even the biggest socialites addiction. But in the spirit of avoiding ground hog day encounters Tweedle Dee and I recently decided to check out a completely different scene and mix it up a little.
The most obvious choice living in Darlinghurst and possibly the gayest city in the world was Gay clubbing. What better place than the monthly event, Gay Bash.
Tucked away downstairs at the Oxford Hotel, Dee and I had no idea what to expect. As we walked down the dark stairwell I got a feeling in my tummy like the first time I ever went out in Kings Cross. Anticipation, excitement, intrigue. We paid our $10 and headed into the club. I’ve never seen so many ‘cool’ looking people. Everyone had awesome style and was super friendly. The music was great, we didn’t get hit on by sleazy guys, the drinks were cheap ($6 for a vodka, lime & soda), they even had free pop-corn at the bar (though I didn’t touch it).
Whilst I’m not ready to trade in my regular scene and go exclusively to gay bars, if they’re all as fun as Gay Bash I’m definitely adding them to the mix.
Gay Bash happens once a month and the next event will be next Saturday 1st May.
See you there!!
